If – The Biggest Word in the Bible

by Rex Rouis

The word ‘if’ is interesting. It is one of the most important words in the Bible because it speaks directly to our responsibility to God. Most promises in the Bible have conditions and the word ‘if’ speaks to those conditions. Our responses to God’s commands affect our relationship with Him and determine our receiving from Him.

Jesus used the word ‘if’ all the time. Almost half of the 574 occurrences in the New Testament are in the four Gospels. Jesus always put the ‘if’ on man’s side and never on God’s side. The following are many uses of the word ‘if’ in the Bible:

If and Hear

If you have understanding, hear this; listen to what I say. – Job 34:16

Hear, O my people, while I admonish you! O Israel, if you would but listen to me! – Psalm 81:8

For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today, if you hear his voice, – Psalm 95:7

If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” – Mark 4:23, and Revelation 13:9

As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” – Hebrews 3:15, 3:7, 4:7

If and Listen

See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, which I am commanding you today; and the curse, if you do not listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside from the way which I am commanding you today, by following other gods which you have not known. Deuteronomy 11:26, 27, 28, and 13:18, 15:5

The LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you only will be above, and you will not be underneath, if you listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, which I charge you today, to observe them carefully, – Deuteronomy 28:13

If you will fear the LORD and serve Him, and listen to His voice and not rebel against the command of the LORD, then both you and also the king who reigns over you will follow the LORD your God. If you will not listen to the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the command of the LORD, then the hand of the LORD will be against you, as it was against your fathers. – I Samuel 12:14, 15

But it will come about, if you listen attentively to Me,” declares the LORD, “to bring no load in through the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but to keep the sabbath day holy by doing no work on it, – Jeremiah 17:24, and 17:27

And you will say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD, “If you will not listen to Me, to walk in My law which I have set before you, – Jeremiah 26:4

If you do not listen, and if you do not take it to heart to give honor to My name,” says the LORD of hosts, “then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings; and indeed, I have cursed them already, because you are not taking it to heart. – Malachi 2:2

If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that BY THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES EVERY FACT MAY BE CONFIRMED. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. – Matthew 18:15, 16, 17

But he said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.'” – Luke 16:31

As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever. – I Chronicles 28:9

If and Faith

And Jesus answered and said to them, “Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ it will happen. – Matthew 21:21

And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea’; and it would obey you. – Luke 17:6

And finally

My son, if you will receive my words And treasure my commandments within you, Make your ear attentive to wisdom, Incline your heart to understanding; For if you cry for discernment, Lift your voice for understanding; If you seek her as silver And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will discern the fear of the LORD And discover the knowledge of God. – Proverbs 2:1, 2, 3, 4, 5

The Bible principle is this – “If man does” then “God will.” Religion takes the ‘if” off man and puts it on God.

Jesus always put the ‘if’ on man’s side and never on God’s side – If man does, God will.

Comments

  1. Every time the bible says, “And it came to pass…”, you can bet there was a big “IF” that preceded it. That says to me that there was a “Process” the preceded the revelation of the “Purpose” that is the “IF” that man is to follow for there to be a “THEN” from God.
Many is very destination focused… “Are we there yet?” We often fail to recognize that we are in the process of working out the “IF” we have been given to . God is very process focused… “IF my people, who are called by my Name….. THEN, I will hear from heaven, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14.

The Purpose of the Process is to reveal and fulfill the Purpose of the Process.

  2. I have always wondered about commitment and discipleship. I would read passages and then during the day would think, am I supposed to be all in? The word if fascinated me because those I know who profess to be Christians didn’t seem to share the same interest in the word.
James says a faith without works is dead. I know works are not for salvation but are a result of a regenerate person.
Paul says to work out your faith with fear and trembling.
Many people I know who are Christians can tell you the exact time and place they were saved. I think yes we are offered salvation by Jesus if we keep his word and endeavor to be like Him. I’m not saying salvation is a process but I think we must live according to His words until the day that we die. We can not turn away mid journey and say well now I will live carnally because I know I am saved. That just doesn’t ring true. Thanks for this article on if. I think if should be shared more in the spreading of the gospel so people will understand there is some effort required on their part.

  3. This study is amazing, I wrote a book called “Living on the Positive Side of “IF” and the end of 2019 I started my podcast “IF” has Power!” It has always been in my spirit about the word IF while I was in my thirties, and now in my about to enter my 70’s the Lord and revealed this to me. I came across your site today and you seen to be the only other person that really sees the power of this two letter word called IF. Thanks for sharing this me! May God blessed you and yours beyond measure. Thanks

    1. What I can’t understand is when certain well known Bible Teachers will say, “if” means “since,”. If ye then be risen with Christ” Colossians 3:1. And other places. If God put if, it is conditional; it’s up to us. God knows if from since. The King James translators were of the best in the world.
I think it’s just another example of watered down preaching that is all too prominent today.

      1. Absolutely agree! In times of stress or sorrow, it is the King James text that plays in my head.

    2. I’m one of your fellow few who have realized the great importance of ‘If’ & have often shared my belief & findings. I punched ‘if you’ bible verses into my search bar due to having a loved one at this time who I thought this could be of importance or helpful in answering frustrated ‘why? ‘/’why not, why can’t, won’t, don’t, hasn’t’ etcs. I hoped to find support & am very thankful to have found such a well written article & look forward to finding & reading your book as well. Oh my! You also used ‘beyond measure’, another personal favorite. Blessings beyond measure to you as well, dear ma’am😊

  4. Why do some translate if as since?
John Mcarthur says of Colossians 3:1, if should be read as since.
I’m thinking that changes the meaning of the verse and assumes all hearing are genuine believers.
Why is this done? I don’t think it’s right.
    Thanks

    Patrick

    1. Maybe just me, conservative and aged, but I do not care for all the different bible versions. I understand about making scripture clearer and that many people will not read King James, but I find “… my cup runneth over…” much more comforting than “he filled my cup”.

    2. Patrick,

(Note: I just now discovered this fine website; it was always posted on the title page of the free download of Charles Price’s “The Real Faith” book, available on Mario Murillo’s own website but I never noticed it until today. Sorry for the delay responding to your question / comment. – Phil).
      ——————————————————————————————————————————————-

This passage is an exception, because the context is different – IF we have truly given our heart and life to Christ then we ARE risen with him. In that case, the word “since” is more accurate.

In the other many examples listed in this fine article, the word “if” is used in a sense of “If……then” promises. In other words, God promises in each of those instances, that IF we do something, THEN God assures us that He will do something or He promises us a guaranteed outcome, or blessing, etc. .

So, in Colossians 3:1, the sequence could be described as: “Since (you ARE risen with Christ)……THEN (you should do do the following things…).

Does this explanation help to clear up the difference between all the examples in the article and the “If…” of Colossians 3:1?

      Phil

  5. Great information please send me a copy of this explanation for the word IF. So powerful this word has been in my spirit.

    1. You skip right over Romans 6:1-11.For if we have died with Christ in baptism we will be will be raised with him.

      1. If you are talking about water Baptism, the “dying” and “raising” happens when one believes. One Corinthians 12:13.
        Ephesians 1:13.

    2. Thank Let’s Never Forget These Most Important IF’s 1 Corinthians 15:2 Saved If You keep …
      Hebrews 3:6, and Hebrews 3 :14 , Colossians 1:21-23 If , etc. Be encouraged to Phil 2:12,
      Thank you Bro Mark 724-600-5744

  6. Thanks for this study.
“If” highlights the responsibility that we have to respond correctly to God’s invitations. Over the years I have come to realize that though God is sovereign and has great and awesome plans for our lives, yet he does not delay his best and most important work for our lives. Rather God’s will often times has to filter through our will, our customs, traditions and our lack of knowledge of how He works in our lives.

  7. I really enjoy the study on “IF”. This IF just dropped in my spirit and I decided to research it that how I came across your site. I would like to get a copy of this study. God bless you keep up the good work

    1. Author

      1. Please send me a pdf on this if’s study my spirit was truly blessed

      2. The Holy Spirit spoke sometime ago to me about this tiny word that packs so much power and is so detrimental to our walk .it emphasises the choice we have been given by God our belief faith obeying and following Jesus all hinge on IF choose ye this day whom you will serve !

    2. I thank you for this study sheet. I found it to be quite educational.
I stumble across this study, looking for another study.
Question do you any study material on the word Let or Never.
Suppose you could help me out with them. I am very grateful.
      Thank you again

  8. Great word study from the smallest biggest impact word in the Bible. IF. For such a time as this. Perfect. Thank you.

      1. Author

Kay – Thank you so much. Another ‘if’ thought. Jesus didn’t mind the leper asking ‘if’ He was willing to heal in Matthew 8:2, 3, and simply responded, “I am willing, Be clean!”

On the other hand, Jesus took great offence to the father asking ‘if’ He was able to deliver his son from demonic attack in Mark 9:22, 23, by responding, “If You can? All things are possible to him who believes!” The Greek here is over the top. That is why the startled father cried out, “I believe; help my unbelief!”

The ‘if’s’ are appropriate in seeking the will of God but are not appropriate in questioning His ability.

        Love you guys. rex

  9. Thank you for taking the time to produce this article it has blessed me so much. I began a study into the ifs of the bible. Your study ,has made my study easier and for that I thank you. Praise God for his wonderful word.

  10. Rex, just found the article on “if” being the biggest word in the Bible, while doing a search to preach on that very thing. My brother, you have done a remarkable job in the compilation of these scriptures! God bless you. One can’t help but see the connection. When God reveals a truth to us, a response is required, and asJames writes; “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. “. Thanks again for your thoughts,, I’m going to subscribe and hope for more just like it. Ron

    1. Author

Ron – Thank you so much for your gracious words. God bless you. We love you. Rex

  11. If my people humble themselves, pray and seek His face and turn from our wicked ways. *** Is a condition of obedience….. And through our obedience our Father listens to our partition. Forgives us and heals our ((( land ))) bodies, families, nations. For through the word *If* comes Faith. Not only faith. But faith with works. Complete submission in obedience.

  12. Randy, thanks for this. You put a lot of work in compiling this. Could you please send me the pdf? Thanks

  13. How do I get a copy of, “If The Biggest Word In The Bible”. I would like to have a copy of it so that when I’m sitting in my quiet place I can read this over and over. Thank You

Meditating on the word of God and the things of God is one of the best things in the world to do. Read it slowly, meditate on it, get quiet, talk to God about it, and enjoy the beautiful presence of Truth. He is there with you! We love you. Rex

      1. God dropped this word into my Spirit and you and your research and. Study rightly divided it such a Blessing unto me. Praying you continue to allow God to open up and share what we are searching for. Be Blessed.

      2. This is one of my favourite words in the bible. I have always found it intriguing. I would appreciate greatly a copy of the article, “If the Biggest word in the bible”

  14. Randy, thank you for your insight about the word if, my question is: please explain to me when Jesus asked Father , quote: Father, If thou be willing, remove this cup from me,……..Luke 22:42, thank you again DEE

    1. A response to Doris. Great Question… Because of His great ♥️. Of course he was willing and wanting but couldn’t. Great study. Thank you Randy. What is your answer?

    2. Minister R B Terry, As I was praying and meditating waiting for GOD’S direction for a message, the word (IF) came and wouldn’t leave. GOD was speaking to me on the importance of this two letter word that’s being overlooked by so many. I googled the word for assistance and WOW you guys have really BLESSED my Spirit with so much info. Thanks GOD BLESS JESUS SAVES. Don’t stop serving!!!

    3. The Holy Spirit spoke sometime ago to me about this tiny word that packs so much power and is so detrimental to our walk .it emphasises the choice we have been given by God our belief faith obeying and following Jesus all hinge on IF choose ye this day whom you will serve !

  15. Great work on one of the most important laws in scripture, the law of conditions (or the law of if) if wanna call it that! I heard a song in church service and in it was a line “I am a friend of God”… Everyone looked happy singing it. So it got me thinking how many children of God miss studying these important conjunctions. Jesus said, you are my friends IF you do what I command you.” There’s a big condition – obedience to commands! I’m not saying I’m good in the area of obedience, sometimes I fall short. But we ought to be vigilant and take heed of the ifs in scripture!
    God bless you.

    1. Agreed. I’ve experienced reading the same scripture several times and discovering something new each time. All the words are important!

      1. God bless everyone!! I’ve been so fascinated with the word if in the Bible because it shows us that there is a presuppose!! God is a god of prerequisite if you do something I will…

  16. I believe God desires us to trust Him because of His Word. His written Word. Sometimes He tells us His plan other times He does not. Just like S,M and A…they did not know if God would save them from the furnace, it did not matter to them, they had Faith in God regardless. Often when times are difficult, and I do not know what tomorrow will bring, my Faith in God gives me the peace and strength to go on, because I know God will be there and all things work for my good.

  17. Thanks for putting all the scriptures together in this great message and teaching ! IF , is POWERFUL !

  18. Without all the “if’s”, “but’s”, “and’s” and “maybe’s” used to prop up religion, it would be seen to be the “emperor without clothes” that it is. With them, the cross changed nothing, and we are worse off than the ancient Israelis were, having to confess sin only once a year. It there is ONE thing that “orthodoxy” holds to unyieldingly, it is that when Jesus said “it is finished”, he was actually lying!

      1. Kay, the same goes for me – without God at the centre, my life would be worthless.

  19. Wonderful job! .. Rex, you did a wonderful job putting this together. Often I come across individuals who are stuck on the concept of ‘Gods in Control of Everything.’ Often it’s simply an excuse to be passive towards being spiritually responsible.

I know I’ll use this material when I minister in this area again. Kudos my Brother! Be blessed, Brother Carl

    1. Author

Carl – Thank you for your comment. I totally agree.

Submission to the will of God is not faith in the will of God. Faith requires knowing the will of God, not some vague ‘whatever happens happens, and I will take whatever I get.’ General submission will never want to walk on water, or even know to walk on water, and it surely will never have the ability to walk on water.

      1. Rex, how do we know the will of God? Isn’t He the only one who knows that?

        1. Author

Kay – Sure, and He shares with us a piece of that secret knowledge of the future, and that is the basis of our faith. That is why Romans 10:17 says, “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the (spoken) word of Christ.” Faith is being told a small piece of the future will and foreknowledge of God. How do we know what He knows about the future? He tells us. Our faith then is essentially inerrant because it is backed by the voice and will of God Himself.

Two of the Gifts of the Spirit are a Word of Knowledge and Word of Wisdom. Both of them are described as a ‘word’ not a sentence, letter, or book. Words are short, just enough knowledge for us to believe and obey. The Word of Knowledge is a short look into the mind of God concerning the present, and the Word of Wisdom is the same about the future.

If too much is said, then less faith would be required. God is rather short sometimes in His communications. He only says what is needed. And then we need to obey. Like, Jesus only saying, “Come” to Peter’s request to walk on water. That word from Jesus conveyed that His will for Peter to walk on water was a ‘Yes.’ That ‘Yes’ was all that Peter needed to believe enough to throw his leg over the side of the boat and walk on water.

This is why we emphasize the seeking of God’s will when in need of faith. In seeking faith, what we are seeking is His will in the situation. Kenneth E. Hagin would say that “Faith begins where the will of God is known.” Hearing from God, I believe, is more than receiving mere information. There is a grace and an anointing, that comes with it that produces what we call ‘Faith’ in our heart. The conveyance of His will in this is the conveyance of faith. This article is an analogy of this – Hearing From God Is Knowing the Future – An Analogy of Faith.

Hebrews 11:1 calls this the foundation (sub-stance) of our hopes. The word ‘substance’ (KJV) or ‘assurance’ (NASB) in that verse also means ‘title-deed.’ The word spoken to us as the basis of our faith is the legal documentation of our desired hopes, the (legal) evidence of things not (yet) seen. For more on this see – Faith Is ‘hupostasis’ – Hebrews 11:1. Wow that was longer than I thought it would be. We love you. God bless. Rex

    1. A way late reply to Kay. People use verses such as “My thoughts are not your thoughts; my ways are not your ways” thinking these verses teach we can’t know God’s thoughts or ways. Yet if you read Isaiah 55 in context God is sying exactly the opposite. He is appealing to the Israelites to leave their ways and quit trusting their thoughts, and to follow God’s ways and thoughts. These ways and thoughts had been given via Moses, the prophets and others to God’s people.

There is even a great If/Then verse in the passage. Similarly the New Testament Law has been “once delivered”. God’s exhaustive and complete thoughts and ways imparted in the inspired word, the Bible.

      God bless!

        1. Powerful study on “IF”.. I was driving when this two letter word pop in my spirit so I start researching it and came across your site. Most of us Christians want God to do everything for us while we sit back but for us to enjoy His promises we have to do something. AMEN
Can you please email a copy?

Randy – Sorry for the late reply. Read I Corinthians chapter two. Paul talks about this. The natural mind and heart do not know the things of God BUT they are given to US by the Holy Spirit Who knows all things. He tells us all things freely given to us by God.
