Depression Is a Spirit – It Must Be Fought with the Word of God

Jesus_cast_out_demons_300_webby Rex Rouis

Even in the midst of blessings, people can have recurrent fits of depression. It comes in like a dark, heavy cloud. We pray, fast, or make resolutions, only to find it getting worse. That is because this cloud of depression is not mental; it is spiritual. It is called the spirit of heaviness.

“To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.” Isaiah 61:3

It is an evil spirit—a personality that studies us, knows our weaknesses, and knows how and when to attack. Recognizing the identity of an enemy is a tremendous first step, but then it must be fought.

It shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered. Joel 2:32

Meditate on scriptures like the one above and pray: “God, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ – according to Your Word – I’m asking you to deliver me from this spirit of heaviness in Jesus Name.”

The pressure will lift, but it is one thing to be delivered; it is another thing to stay delivered. It is now up to us to reprogram our minds – to cultivate a different outlook and way of thinking. Before deliverance, we are not able to do it, but now after deliverance, it is our responsibility to do it.

The problem is our mind. The devil reaches people through their minds. The more we trust in our mind, the more Satan is able to use it against us. It is up to us to make our mind realize that it is our servant, not our master. Our minds are affected by our thoughts, so we must take charge of what we think.

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, 4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but [b]divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. 5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, II Corinthians 10:3-5

Remember, just as heaviness is a real spirit, the God of the Bible is a real Person, and He is behind each promise. He promised them to you for a reason – to help you. Read them, study them, meditate on them. They will give you hope and they will change you. It will not come in five minutes. It will take hard work, but it will come and it will work, and it is worth every bit of effort.

God’s deliverance can set you free, but it is your responsibility to fight for your continued deliverance. Take control of your thoughts, and bring them under control and in line with the Word of God. Experience the glorious freedom and joy that God has for you.

  1. Thank You very much you save me from been depressed for about 7months now..May God richly bless you

  2. Rex,
Will you please provide me with your mailing address for a donation since i don’t like using my credit card over the internet?
Also, will you remove my email address i posted on my Comment dated Sept 23? Heidi already has it, and i realized i shouldn’t let it just sit there online. My mistake. Oyyy.
You have a wonderful website, so many are being hit with depression and anxiety who don’t know what to do with it.
    Thank you!

  3. Wow pray for me I am dealing with depression and anxiety. This is new for me I have never dealt with it before. But I am trusting in the lord almighty for deliverance. Faith and action. I am going to fight this with all the might and strength that God gives me.

    1. Demi, we will be praying for you tonight. *******Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world*******

The enemy goes to extremes in attempt to make you believe he has power over you. Pay no mind to his cartwheels and flip flops.
The truth is he lost when Jesus ascended and booted him from heaven.

    2. There is something I would like to say as someone who has been experiencing bouts of depression.

When we faced with depression, we should use the Word of God because the origin of depression or heaviness is from the pit of hell. It will take time to realize the freedom of it. But keep pushing on. Keep trusting God. Jesus said not to let our hearts be troubled. We trust in God, we should also trust Him.

The Word alone won’t help to be delivered from the spirit of heaviness. It should be followed by thanksgiving and praise. Thanksgiving and praise lifts the spirits. It gets encouraged, and strengthened. This will be reflected to your soul.

Another thing is to realize depression can be inherited. Therefore you’ve to break the cord from having an effect on you, and your children. Ask for forgiveness on behalf of your ancestors if they did something that opened a door to this spirit to move from one family to another.

I will be praying for you.

  4. IMPORTANT: Many people are not aware that NICOTINE is a major CAUSE of DEPRESSION and NINE OTHER FORMS OF MENTAL ILLNESS. This includes VAPING, a.k.a. e-Cigarettes and ALL tobacco products.

Smoking regular cigarettes or e-Cigarettes TRIPLES the risk of DEPRESSION and more than QUADRUPLES (430%) the risk of SUICIDE!

Use the scriptures and valuable information in the article above, but while you are standing on God’s Word for deliverance, STOP SMOKING. “Faith without corresponding action is dead.” (James 2:17

    1. Pray with me also I have been born again since I was 10. My greatest desire has been to see his kingdom come
In the past10 months, I have suffered loss of two relationships that were meant to lead to marriage.
I have always had a sound mind and I have Overcome every other challenge by the help of God.
This is seeming to hard for me to handle .I also seem to have forgotten to who I was.

      1. Dear Faith,
I will pray for you. Be very encouraged! If those 2 doors closed, He has something else in mind for you. Do not fret beloved!

  5. Hello, please pray for me my name is Amber it’s this deep sadness and anger that keeps trying to Arise in my life. The enemy wants me to stay in unforgiveness but every time he reminds me of the hurt in my life I Release the situation and the people to God. I respond to memories by saying yes that did happen I was hurt but I Release the pain I released the person and I forgive. Even if it was something I did in my past. I’m becoming really Exhausted with the cycle of emotions just up roaring in me out of nowhere. But with reading this I’m going to Declare and decree that I am free from now on.

  6. INTERCESSORY PRAYER meeting tonight for all of you precious saints that are on this website.

If anyone has something specific they need prayer for, let me know. We have been seeing wonderful answers and mighty deliverance.

      1. Heidi,

Okay! You are on our radar for prayer tonight. I sure wish you could get online with us. When that nasty debilitating feeling got on me, they went to battle for me in prayer, live….. and after i got offline, i realized it was GONE. It left!
Even if you dont want to, i want you to know, YOU are priority on our list tonight. XOX

          1. Heidi, okay!

We prayed for you a few nights ago. Its very encouraging, there were about 12 people who came in and prayed with us last night at 7pm. We prayed for a young gal specifically who has been through a lot. When everyone tells you they cant help you, thats the perfect time for the Lord to swoop in and rescue and minister to you. There IS a way out. Jesus IS a deliverer and savior who will give you the strength and hope you need. Glad you decided to. When i didnt hear from you, I prayed just yesterday, Lord please bring her!

    1. Hello, I would love to join in prayer with you guys. I am battling depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, work issues, etc. I just need God to come and deliver me, and I need God to help me take every thought captive. Amen.

      1. Elizabeth,

Wonderful! I posted my email address on a comment yesterday dated sept 23, its the sixth comment from the bottom. Go ahead and email me so we can hook up!

    2. Hello, please pray for me my name is Amber it’s this deep sadness and anger that keeps trying to Arise in my life. 1. Amber, we will definitely pray for you. Sounds like it keeps popping up to see if you take the bait. You are handling it so right. Each time the thought and anger comes up, you choose to take it captive to the obedience of Christ. Good for you. The flesh thinks it has a right to hold onto anger and a grudge. That happens to me too, and I have to catch it and say, no you don’t. The fact is, you are a new creature in Christ, and the flesh no longer rules. Beloved, we will lift you up in prayer so you get relief from the anger and sadness. Be of good courage because we know who reigns!

    3. Please pray for me to be delivered from the spirit of depression and anxiety.
      Thank you very much.

      1. Marc, there are a lot of us experiencing the same thing and I can tell you that reading God’s Word and praying does take care of the problem. But, it has to be a daily thing so I will be praying for you and all the others that suffer from depression and anxiety. My prayers are with you.

      1. Bob, we have been having prayer throughout the month of September, but if anyone needs prayer, post your need and the I am sure the saints following this website, along with myself, will pray.

    4. Hi
      Please include me in prayer.
      Physical and depression emotional challenged.
      Praying
      Steven
      Thanks

      1. Steven, dear beloved, praying for you now. You are not forgotten. May the Spirit of God quicken you and set you completely free through the truth of knowledge of salvation found in Jesus Christ alone.

  7. Hi Michael, I don’t think the spirit of depression is from God to test you. God’s spirit is full of light and joy. What you are thinking is a lie, a deception from the enemy. That’s what you must resist the lie. In Jesus’ name, you shall bind the spirit of depression and in Jesus’ name, ask God to bring you His supernatural peace, joy and calm.

    1. I agree that depression is a spirit. Once the Holy Spirit revealed this to me, I recognised it for what it was. I rebuked it in the name of Jesus and forbid it to return. It is one of the most powerful spirits, but as soon as it is discovered it has no ground and must go.

    2. Amen Jenny,
Upon going into intercessory prayer for my children, I said to myself, this is a lie from the pit of hell, and my family is free in the mighty matchless name of Jesus. I have to go into warfare prayer on this and in faith believe that depression, anxiety, and evil powers preventing family reconciliation must be rebuked, bound and cast out in the name of Jesus. Thank you for your post.

  8. I also have the depression spirit. I thought it was Gods will! It hasn’t left and I’m over this! I’m tired! I had a nightmare couple nights ago that there was a heavy black shadow sitting on my upper back and I kept trying to shake it off. My goodness it was heavy and weighing me down. Sort of how I feel everyday!!!! When I need to even get out of bed, I feel hopeless and no reason for anything anymore. I’m afraid prayer isn’t enough!!!! Is there a christian retreat or something that can help??

    1. Hi. I see it as a good thing that The Lord has shown you the cloud. There is a saying, “The Lord reveals in order to redeem” You now know what you are dealing with is definitely spiritual. I am praying with you. I woud also advise that you spend more time in praise and thanksgiving(counting your blessings). It will take some effort on your part and may not even feel like it i possible but you are close to your breakthrough. Press on! We are praying with you!

    2. I had a dream a long time ago which I think was a warning dream from God saying that my heart would grow cold and I would change as a person. Then it did and then I was severely tormented because I felt my heart turning cold and then I had a spiritual vision of myself turning into a pile of bones with mass amounts of people like in the days of Noah. It was like a spirit spoke to me. I guess the devil. Then I got involved with false teachers who were claiming to be the two witnesses of revelation on accident and ended up with more oppressing spirits. I ended up in a kundalini awakened state and remained that way for 6 years. I also heard something speak and tell me that I was Hebrews 6 and that God is not a respector of persons. But I was delivered from the kundalini awakening through prayer back in October. That’s why I always look back to October thinking “why would God deliver me from that if He was finished with my life?” So that’s why I ran away from God back in 2013 because I was terrified of Him. I guess the devil made me think He was cruel.

But also when I was a kid I was randomly thinking “what is my purpose” and then all of a sudden it’s like God spoke to me in a vision. And I saw these two hands holding a light and heard “I gave you life” and I knew immediately it was God. And last October after I was delivered from that strange spirit my wife was randomly scrolling through her pictures on her phone and then I saw the same hands that I saw in that vision as a small child. So it’s like it was a fulfilled prophecy or something.

So I see the state of my heart and it’s a battle in my mind because I see how cold it is and I’m like oh no is that tormenting vision going to come true? Or is there a plan since I was delivered back in October from the kundalini awakening? This is what I’m dealing with. It’s a battle for my life it feels like. And in recent times I have had moments of relief from my torments that I haven’t experienced in years. Like that time I think I actually felt the Spirit and my heart was soft and I was able to cry and thank God with sincerity. I have to hold onto these experiences because if I don’t I only have hopeless ones that I’m left with. I feel like Gods enemy much of the time but it’s like a heavy oppressive feeling. My life has been very difficult. I don’t know who to talk to. Who goes through this type of stuff?

    3. Pray the binding prayers, bind the spirit of depression to the foot of the Holy Cross, when done ask our Lord Jesus to fill you with the Spirit of Joy

    4. Hi Raj. Once I recognised that depression was a spirit, I decided to tackle this with direct confrontation. “Knowing I have all authority in Christ, I commanded you – spirit of depression – in the name of Jesus Christ, and by the power of His blood – to leave me, to desist, retreat and go to the place that Christ has assigned you.” Recognise immediately if it attacks you again. Go around your house. Remove every occult object. Burn them smash them and remove them. Take the Bible and place it on the walls of your dwelling and say the same words. Take bread and wine and give yourself communion. Never deviate from the Word of God. This is your armour. God bless.

    5. This is a stubborn one by the sounds of it. Prayer is of no use. You need to take authority! I’m sure you have cast it away in the name of Jesus. Examine everything in your life which may be attracting it. Thought processes. Saying no negative words about yourself. Lifestyle, occult artifacts in your house, even non Christian friends carry stuff with them. Walk around your home. Place the Bible on every wall. Take wine as the emblem of the blood of Jesus. Call on the power of the blood to deal with the depression. If it tries to return, you will recognise it, and banish it. Call on Christ to deal with it and send it to where it belongs.

  9. Can anyone answer my question? How do I know if this depression or whatever it is, is a test God is allowing to conform me to His image. Or something that He wants out of my life NOW! I know I’m given a spirit of power and totally
Agree that I have power over this. But it’s not leaving, which is making me think it’s His will for me to be in it for now.

    1. Hi Michael,

I’d say if its just a down time you are going through, like a door closing on your job, or something temporary where you are just saddened over something, thats pretty normal. But if you find it doesnt go away, causes hopelessness, a crushing heaviness on your spirit, oppression, etc, its very likely then to be a spirit. Some feel like they cant escape it, it causes severe pain, fearfulness of their future, suicidal thoughts, thats when i would also be concerned.

The Lord chastises us, but its not with a crushing hopelessness that doesnt cease. With me, i could feel the heaviness on my spirit that was so painful. I too at first thought, this is some type of trial or suffering i am going thru, but when it continued on and on even after crying out to the Lord, i knew it was the enemy, but i had no idea how to get it off me.

What is so tricky about the enemy is he tries to get you to believe its God who is doing it to you. So if you believe that, then you just accept it, and the depression continues on and on. He is slick if he can make you think its Gods will, then he can remain tormenting you.

Strongholds are set up when a thought comes that isnt the truth. If you ACCEPT the thought and AGREE with it in your heart, youve allowed it to take up residence….not realizing it wasnt the truth. I always think be careful of what you agree to in your heart.

In your post, you gave 4 different reasons why it should be allowed to stay. 1) a test, 2) to get you to conform to his image, 3) something he wants out of your life so hes allowing it, 4) since its not leaving, it may be Gods will for it to stay. All of them have to do with it being Gods will for you. The devil is such a liar. How tricky is that, trying to make you believe God wants it to be on you?

You can see His will for you, in His Word. …. 2 Timothy 1.7 Also says I HAVE GIVEN YOU THE SPIRIT OF A SOUND MIND. Depression is an unsound mind. And a FRUIT of the Spirit is JOY, not depression. Again, if its just a temporary thing youre going through and you are fretful of your circumstance, its normal to cry out to God, and he delivers! But for it to remain on you, i would be highly suspicious of it being your enemy. If he can convince you its Gods will, he gets to continue to hide knowing hes deceived you.

I love this scripture…..You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.

And regarding it not going away, making you think it must be Gods will? If you do come to the point and realize its your enemy, its just another last ditch effort of it trying to remain there. If he cant get you to believe its Gods will, and you begin to cast it out, it will try its best to hold on. It used to challenge me that it is not leaving, so just accept it. It lied to me right to the end in hopes of staying there. I had this struggle for years. The biggest lie of all….. that it isnt going anywhere and doesnt have to leave.

The Spirit of God living in you has power over all the power of the enemy. If you realize its not coming from the Lord, KNOW that you DO have power over ALL his power. And if it just stays there, say oh well, stop trying to strive and just say in your heart, oh well, I KNOW and BELIEVE anyway that i DO have power over it.

Two different occasions when the enemy wasnt budging. …… i came off a three day fast and the devil said in my thoughts, HaHa God still didnt answer you. At that very moment i thought in my heart, I WILL BELIEVE HIM ANYWAY. The moment i thought that, the Lord answered the prayer of my fast. I heard, not audibly, but the words were just there……I WILL BE WITH YOU. And i got my answer. The second occasion i was lying down and had this awful continual ringing in my ears and i told it get off me in the Name of Jesus, and it just kept on, so i stopped striving and said in my heart, i will believe God anyway……and the ringing immediately stopped. Theres something about being challenged and believing God anyway, that is powerful.

As for finally getting rid of the depression once and for all, i blasted it over and over repeating 2 Tim 1.7 GOD HAS GIVEN ME A SPIRIT OF POWER, and i didnt back down, and it left. No ones going to trump Gods power.

The SWORD OF THE SPIRIT, the Word of God. Whats neat is, it is the Sword of the SPIRIT, in another words, the power of the Spirit, its the Holy Spirit slashing the enemy. Its the Holy Spirit who manifests through the word and its HIS SWORD. I will pray the Lord gives you understanding and shows you the truth of what youre going through. But it it just continues on and on with no way out, you can probably know then that its the enemy.
God bless you, the Lord is with you!

      1. I believe I’m also being tormented by a spirit of depression since my childhood. I think my parents have it too. I’ve also always accepted it as being God’s will, or his pruning. During a mission trip I realized it had been there all my life, but it still stuck to me. I don’t know what I should do, or how to go about it.

        1. Author

M – It is a spirit that has attached to your family somehow. When I have a moment I will send you an email to contact me. God can, and desires to set you free. He loves you and He DOES NOT prune in this fashion. That is the devil. We love you. Rex

          1. I so believe, where you mentioned stop striving for it and just believe regardless. I too did that during Covid,. I was trying to get to speak with Unemployment State office, which takes days and days to get through from my previous experiences at beginning of Covid, but needed quick answers from them. I prayed for the Lord’s help. It was still taking a while so I was telling the Lord I trust in Him and He would get me through, over and over. I felt like He told me that I was not trusting, I was fretting and not resting. So I said ok Lord. I dropped down in my spirit, repented and let go and rested, no more repeating “I trust you Lord while still on edge about not getting through. I had all the answers I needed within a 24 hour time frame, and that was having to call to talk to three different people and having start from scratch each time. It was truly God’s intervention and my obedience to believe through resting.

            1. Author

Cheryl – What a blessed story. Congratulations, you believed God, and He moved on your behalf. Now, do that with everything else for the rest of your life. Fretting and talking to God while you are fretting does not work. Turning it over to Him and letting go is massive. I believe in speaking and talking to God, but sometimes it is just worry talk. You don’t talk like that to someone you trust.

I am also reigniting my understanding and belief in speaking to the situation instead of so much talking to God about the situation. Very similar to what Jesus said about speaking to the mountain (Mark 11:23). We have the responsibility to handle our mountains, so, that means we have the authority to handle our mountains. We love you. Rex

            2. Cheryl,

Wow…… Loved hearing your testimony. We cry, whine, wail, fret, blubber, and strive and it does show we arent trusting and resting. Same thing happens to me. Its not until i take my hands completely off the situation and stop striving…… giving up and giving it all over to Him is when i see the Holy Spirit swoop in and take over. There is something about him waiting until the hand of flesh lets go of it. I have to come to my complete end and let go knowing i cannot do it. I am excited then, because i know i am getting ready to see him take over and rescue me. Its actually exciting because i know i am about to see a miracle!
Thats why god told Paul……..MY power is made perfect in your weakness. So soooo exciting.

        2. I’m always suffering from depression, pains and fear, fear of the unknown future, fear of not being worthy enough, fear of things going wrong, most times I wake in the middle of the night at times only to end up crying my eyes out. Sometimes I feel God is punishing me for a wrong. I really get to that point where I just want to scream my throat out

          1. Rachel, i just saw your post from long ago. The Lord who loves you soooo much isn’t doing that to you. 2 Tim 1.7 says he doesnt give you fear, rather he says he gave you a Spirit of Power. And God isnt punishing you for some wrong that you dont even know about, because Isaiah 53 says the chastisement that brought you peace was placed on Jesus.

It also says in 2 Tim 1.7 He has given you the spirit of a SOUND MIND. If you are born again, you have received the Holy Spirit who indwells you, so no more wondering where Gods power is. So whats tormenting you isnt God doing it. God gave you POWER over ALL the power of the enemy. Stand your ground, and tell the lying spirit of depression that it doesnt get to just keep tormenting you. Your deliverance comes in BELEIVING GOD. We cry and whine when it challenges us and just keeps tormenting. When that happens, i stand my ground and think give it your best shot devil…because I BELIEVE GOD and NOT YOU! Theres no awful symptom you can give me that will make me believe you. I believe God! Ephesians 6….put on the full armor of God and use the weapon that destroys the devil with the sword….THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT WHICH IS THE WORD OF GOD. And it says, HAVING DONE ALL (all you know to do, STAND!).
You hold up that shield of faith and keep holding it no matter what you feel. The enemy is persistent to test you and will keep knocking you down if he can get you to doubt! Doubt and unbelief will make you give up, walk away and leave you feeling defeated. God wants you to believe Him. He is no liar. But the enemy is lying to you and tricks you to keep doubting. GODS WORD SAYS HE GAVE YOU A SPIRIT OF POWER.
Dont wander around crying in the wilderness as the israelites did for years, and as i did for years. But believe his Promises to you, hold them in your heart no matter what. And dont settle for sneaky lying thoughts that say God is doing this to you because of this or that, or the thought that says its Gods will for you to suffer like that. Dont believe that for even a minute. Dont take no for an answer. Its gotta GO and NOW…. not next month or next year, it has to go NOW.
Dont allow one little doubt in, you stand believing God deep in your heart and dont let it go,,,,,and you will get your answer. ONLY BELIEVE.

      2. Prayers needed for so isaiah against addictions and bipolar and paranoia. Schizophrenia. We as patents need help and strength. Prayers needed for husband kidney disease.

        1. Andrea,,,,,

I will pray for isaiah and your husband. When things look and feel so awful, its easy to focus on the pain of it. Thats when i have to turn my focus on how great, how big, mighty and caring God is. Thats what helps me so much, because otherwise it feels so overwhelming. Then i remind myself, remembering his awesome deeds and works, and how He IS a God of miracles! Hes sooooooo BIG. And we can trust him, because He IS faithful!

          1. I agree with you ? 100% that depression is spirit. I have so many experiences. The Word, praying in Tongues and using the Blood of Jesus are the most powerful weapon. I am talking out of practical experience.

            1. Hi James,
Could you please tell me how you use the Blood of Jesus? Also, I am undergoing very bad personal circumstances that are in large part causing my depression. In this case, is it still an evil spirit causing my depression?

      3. Hi Delivered ! I thank you for your amazing testimony! It’s really supportive and so true. When I was reading it I was so encouraged I praise God for the family of Christ ! I recall some similar experience… with just keeping on… even if it’s not manifested yet, but as you say I will believe Him anyways… then enemy can’t do anything anymore and leaves ! Glory to God! and it’s not easy to keep on… a specialy along. That’s when its mostly needed the brother or sister in Christ who will share their testimony and that is helping to get back on the feet for those who losing there strength! And it’s brotherly love which never fails ! Thank you again brother! One will chase one thousand and two will chase ten thousand. Thank God we have a family in Christ! Thanks for this web site also!
I find a lot of support and encouragement here and I know I am not along I see God’s love never fails! God bless !

        1. Lily, hello!
What a nice message, thank you. Who would think when you hear no answer to prayer, see nothing in sight, and you dont feel anything….that he is indeed there. When all odds are against you, simply believing and trusting him is so powerful.
It reminds me of our armor in Ephesians 6,,,,at the end, it says, And having done all, to stand! Having done all you know to do, remain, stand and do not budge. Wow wow wow…….There is no one like our God!
          P.s. .. i am a she. Xox!

    2. Rex and Michael – Amen to all of the above! BUT….I do have a big concern. You don’t discuss medication or different degrees/types of depression and mental illness. I am a Christian, and I DO believe in the power of prayer but I am wondering your thoughts about seeking medical and psychiatric help. I am NOT an expert in either, but I am concerned that you do not address this. Perhaps when you say “depression” you are referring to situational depression? No need to get into it, and NO I am not an expert in the mental health field – not at all! I do believe in the power of prayer, but I also believe we need to care for our bodies (and minds) and seek medical attention when necessary. If a friend was having an appendix attack I would pray, but also encourage them to get to the hospital. Mental illness (or some types of it) may need medical/psychiatric expertise. WITH prayer of course. Shouldn’t people suffering from depression also be encouraged to pray that the Holy Spirit guides them to seek professional help if necessary, and that they are conscious of the Holy Spirit guiding them as they pray about their personal situation and what they are being led to do? It concerns me that you do not address this, and if I missed it somewhere else (in comments or another post), please direct me to that so I can read it! Thank you so much.

AMY & EVERBODY ELSE – We fully support medication and counseling. My daughter is an ex-army social worker and she deals with all kinds of stuff. She mostly does the legit counseling thing but always has the spirit in the back of her mind, that is the true longterm answer. The drugs and the counseling get your head above water so you can find your footing to get to the better place. Just like we fully support someone taking proper medication for something like cancer – JUST DO IT IN FAITH ALWAYS BELIEVING THAT GOD IS THE ONE DOING THE HEALING. Jesus paid for it so don’t allow Him to get robbed or your deliverance.

It’s just like I Corinthians 2:14, using natural thinking and the intellect is needed and fine, as long as you understand there is something higher that can take precedent when it wants to.

And, yes, there are different degrees of issues that go from just having a bad thought that dwells a little too long to oppression, to full-blown possession, and everything in between. The deep stuff is usually always spiritual, so you have to deal with it spiritually. Do what you need to do so you can keep going in the spirit to get to where you want to be In-Christ. We love you. Rex

      2. ALL illness, mental or otherwise is not from God but from the enemy – every time. How we going about getting treated, either through doctors or faith, is up to us.

    3. YOU MAY BE RIGHT ON THE MARK… I SAY THAT BECAUSE MY DAUGHTER IS STILL RECOVERING FROM AN EMOTIONAL AND MENTAL BREAKDOWN… SHE IS STILL GOING TO COUNSELING.. SHE HAD TO GET MED.S TO HELP HERE GET HERSELF BACK?.. WE PRAYED AND SOUGHT GOD.. HE DIDN’T DELIVER HER RIGHT AWAY.. IT HAS TAKEN MONTH’S OF TREATMENT. IF THE WHOLE PERSON ISN’T TREATED HEALING CAN’T COME?.. SPIRIT, , SOUL,, BODY!.. IT’S ALL OF IT TOGETHER.. HOPE THIS HELPS

    4. Michael, in addition to your spiritual work, it is imperative that you talk to your doctor about your depression. If you had cancer, would you seek a doctor’s help? Of course you would.

    5. @Michael, Satan is a master of disguise. He will tempt Christians to think that what they’re going has been brought upon them by God to teach them something. I bet you’ve heard people saying God gave me this illness to teach me something. That isn’t true. This puts God in the same league with Satan.
As noted in the article about the spirit of heaviness, depression comes from the camp of the Devil. It doesn’t come from God.
The Bible says that when Jesus was on earth, he healed every form of sickness and disease. This clearly shows that it’s not God’s will for us to be sick or tormented by various diseases including mental illnesses.
You’ve to use the power that resides in you to bind the spirit of heaviness and cast it to hell where it belongs. The Word says whatever we bind here on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever we loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
Pray, Read the Bible and always Praise the Lord. I find when I praise the Lord, my heart becomes light. I feel free.
Finally, as indicated in the Bible, God gave us the spirit of sound mind not of fear.

    7. How can anyone be conformed to His image whilst having a spirit of depression at the same time? It’s not logical. I suggested some things to Raj in the comments above. If it doesn’t work, find Christian friends who BELIEVE in deliverance. Don’t bother with the wishy-washy ones.

  10. I’m 40 years old and I’ve never been married. I’ve spent my life lonely and have battled the spirit of depression numerous times. I was in a 14 month long relationship that was very serious that just ended. He had said he wanted to marry me and he couldn’t live without me. Two days later I’m no longer wanted. I am battling this spirit of depression and of rejection once again. I am exhausted emotionally and physically. It is stronger than ever. I’ve no support around me. I need advice please.

    1. Jeannie, i am sorry to hear that. I went through something similar. I was so upset and thought why do i always seem to get hurt Lord? I drew a sad face on paper. I looked at it and the thought came….because you keep loving someone who would hurt you. I then thought, no more, so i called my boyfriend who wanted his space but had wanted me to go with him to Thanksgiving. I told him very nicely he will have to go alone, ive made up my mind and i am done.

We got off the phone and he called me a few minutes later and said he changed his mind. He doesnt want to be away from me and does want to marry me. Ive been married to him now for 22 years. Guys can get scared. I dont imagine youve heard the last of him. Get your confidence back, and say okay! I was determined not to settle because i knew the Lord has something good for me.

God is with you. If this guy isnt the one the Lord has for you, be glad. Dont worry, the Lord has got you. But dont give this fellow the power over you to throw you into depression.

      1. Thank you for your words of encouragement, Anna. Unfortunately he doesn’t seem to want me back but continues to reach out and check on me. I think you are so correct about picking the wrong guys. It’s just so difficult when you’re 40 and desperately want a family. You almost become blinded to all the negative, living in a fairytale relationship. I’ve wondered for so long why God hasn’t brought me my husband. It’s difficult to continue to trust that He will…but here I am again.
Many continued blessings on you and your 22 year marriage! Thank you for reaching out.

        1. Jeannie,

Went through 34 YEARS of depression and oppression, cried out, prayed, pleaded for God to deliver me. Couldnt understand why it was happening. God spoke to me just recently through 2 Timothy 1:7 which says, God has not given me a spirit of fear, but he has given me a SPIRIT OF POWER, of love and a SOUND MIND.

If you are a Christian who has the Holy Spirit indwelling you, YOU ALREADY HAVE a Spirit of Power. Its not something he is going to do in the future, he had already given it to you. Past tense. Problem was the devil was using his power over me, until I realized I have already been given total power over him.

2 Timothy 1:7. …. He has given me a SPIRIT OF POWER, of love and a SOUND MIND.
Colossians 1:13. He HAS DELIVERED us (again PAST tense) from the POWER OF DARKNESS and translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.
Luke 10:19. I GIVE YOU POWER to tread on serpents and scorpions and OVER ALL THE POWER OF THE ENEMY, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

The devil tossed me around, until i KNEW and understood what God has already done for me in Christ. The moment i realized, I already have power over him, is the moment the oppression, depression, hopelessness completely ceased. God wants you to know who you are in Christ. Jesus said, it is finished. God isnt sending his son again.

Its not something he is going to give you, he has ALREADY GIVEN YOU A SPIRIT OF POWER, yet we keep begging and pleading for it. God must be shaking his head. How can do anymore if you wont believe what he has already given you.
Its like praying and crying to be saved and forgiven of your sins. He ALREADY died and forgave your sins. All you had to do was believe it.

I got free the moment i realized it was ME who had power over it.

You have POWER over the spirit of depression and over ALL its power.

          1. Yes, I am a believer. Wow! 34 years is a long time. Praise God for your deliverance! I too have a history of severe depression. It was a very tough battle over my mind, but I did it with God’s Word. You are so right, Anna. I don’t know why something so simple seems so difficult! I will meditate on these scriptures!

            1. Jeannie,

How are you doing, been thinking about you. I remember when going through depression, i would think, “Why wont you deliver me God?” I would hear others talk about his faithfulness, and i would think why am i not experiencing that? It would hurt even more thinking he was just watching what i was going through, and wasnt answering. Made me think, this isnt the God i read about in scripture. Scripture talks about his Mightiness, his Great Power, his Tender Mercies, how he answers our prayers, how huge his miracles are, his great love for us, and what a powerful Deliverer he is. And there i was crushed and sobbing that I wasnt experiencing those things.

I knew i had a negative mindset as i focused just like the Israelites did walking around the wilderness for years. He told them he was giving them a land of milk and honey, but their attitude in the wilderness made them negative and complain and thought they’d die. They too were focused on their circumstance rather than his Promise and his Mightiness.

Sometimes i think we do not understand what actually took place at his death and resurrection and how powerful it was and what that means to us. Remember me? I kept begging, crying and whining, falling down wondering why he wouldnt deliver me. As the enemy used his power over me to convince me he had the power, God showed me the truth….I have given you a Spirit of Power!

When i saw what a big fat lie the depression was, I said OH NO you don’t. Its ME who has POWER OVER YOU. Thats when it left. If it ever tries to come back, it will be met with the Word of God, the Sword of the Spirit. I KNOW that i am the one with the power because God said, I HAVE GIVEN YOU, means i already have it. All the devil can do is lie. Youre actually just fighting a lie. He isnt so big and bad like he wants you to believe, his power is in a lie. And when you catch that lie, its SO easy to reject and bring it to the TRUTH. You are not fighting an enemy that has power over you. You are being presented with a simple lie that tries to make you believe it. He was defeated by Jesus, so all he can do is lie in hopes you will believe him. And then you will cry, woe is me.

I walked thru my house loudly loudly declaring over and over, GOD HAS GIVEN ME A SPIRIT OF POWERRRRRRR. And i wouldnt back down. Thats when it disappeared. I plastered these scriptures all over my house…..

God has given me a Spirit of Power. 2 tim 1.7

He has delivered us from the POWER of darkness. Coloss 1

I give you POWER to tread on serpents and scorpions and over ALLLLLLL the power of the enemy.

Jeannie, He is sooooo BIG and Mighty and Good. He has awesome things in store for you. We are talking about the God who parted the RED SEA. Who has made his home IN you by the Holy Spirit. God who created the heavens and the earth lives IN you. He is not weak nor feeble.

********To Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all we can ask or imagine.******

Praise Him in whatever circumstance youre in with your boyfriend. He has a FAR better plan, and you wont dread it or be disappointed.

            2. Hello Anna,
Thank you so much for checking on me! Your words gave me so much peace. Right now I just need to constantly redirect my mind to His truth….which is a bit difficult to do by myself. Everyday is a struggle, but I’ve seen His mercies through things like your encouragement to me. Thank you so much! I hope you have a wonderful day!

        2. Jeannie,

2 Timothy 1.7 says God has given you a spirit of power. The power of the Holy Spirit trumps the power of depression.

You shall KNOW the truth, and THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE.

Ive had the Holy Spirit manifest and deliver me 3 times on this scripture. Saying GOD HAS GIVEN ME A SPIRIT OF POWER. One time i repeated it three times with all my heart, and the third time i said it, the words coming out of my mouth were no longer just words, but they turned into the Holy Spirit and Power. The very moment the Holy Spirit manifest, the enemy fled so fast like lightning.

Its not Gods will for you to be overwhelmed by his enemy. You, right now, have the Holy Spirit indwelling you. Thats ALL the power you need.

    2. Jeannie,

What you have to do is simple. Jesus WANTS you to have a sound mind, peace, and joy. If He could descend and talk to you face to face He would say “I have plans to give you hope and a future, I want to bless you with abundant life”. Find the verses in the the Bible that express what Jesus wants for you, then just BELIEVE. Problem is your mind has been oppressed from the world with doubt, confusion, guilt, etc. Its not going to come quick or easy (it very well could though) but you just have to renew your mind to how God thinks about you and His future for you.

“The righteous cry out and the Lord delivers them out of all their trouble.

Either Jesus lied or He is going to deliver you/already has delivered you. Another powerful verse is “Lean not on your own understanding, acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.” He will give you the desires of your heart IF it lines up with His will. And having a peace of mind, joy, self control and power IS HIS WILL!!

      1. Thank you, Henry. Yes, God actually reminded me today that He has a hope and a future for me. I think I’m just afraid it’s not the future I want…as terrible as it seems. I just so want a family. I’ve asked him to remove the desire if it’s not His plan for me. I will look up these scriptures and meditate on them as well!

  11. I feel alone, even when I’m not. I haven’t been diagnosed with depression, but I went around to everyone, every website, and they can all confirm it. Everything I do feels wrong and brings unwanted guilt for no reason. At first, I thought it was I lost interest in things, but no, that wasn’t it at all. I felt alone, miserable, I have negative thoughts, everything I once enjoyed just a few days ago has put some burden on me. I know I haven’t lost interest because deep down, I know I love all of those things. I believe it’s Satan playing with my mind and making me feel miserable. I’m struggling with these thoughts. The minute I sit there and do what I love and feel the joy in it, a little voice in my head is like “your too old”, or “you don’t deserve to be happy.” I’m scared because I feel alone.
Growing up I’ve struggled majorly. I was bullied everywhere I went, I watched my mother almost die, people have abandoned me and my sister and mother, and recently this year, I had gone through something that shook my world. In my mind, this was bound to happen. When I try and run to the Gospel, it feels like a burden. It feels like its wrong.
I don’t want to eat, and when I do, I want to throw up. Never in my life have I felt hopeless until now. I believe I’ll get through this, but then that bad part of me wants to just give up and die.
It scares me because when I ask for prayers and I read the Gospel, it feels wrong and like I’m not supposed to. Every single person has told me to push through this (mom, pastor, sisters, friends, etc.) and my brain will revert back to normal. I need to train my brain to believe in those happy thoughts. When I did that before, It always worked and made me feel happy again… until now 🙁

    1. Dear Asha, from what you wrote it certainly sounds like an ongoing fight with depression, and the thoughts that go with it. Such as…… feeling alone, guilt, miserable, hopelessness, you don’t deserve to be happy, scared, feeling alone, the heavy burden, wanting to give up and die. Call on Jesus name. He made you worthy by dying for your sins and rising from the grave. No one is worthy because we have all sinned the bible says, but God who is rich in mercy saved us by his grace. You will never be good enough by your own merit to come before God, but he made you worthy by sending his son Jesus. When it comes to the gospel, it doesn’t matter really how you feel. The FACT remains, God made a promise that whosoever believes in his son has eternal life. Ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit after you call on Jesus. Its an eternal covenant he will never break. Say Father, fill me heart with the Spirit of Life and take over. Jesus, the Spirit of Christ will come to indwell you. He called the spirit, living water. He will never leave you or forsake you. As for it feeling wrong, tell the devil to shut it. And call all the more on Jesus name. There is salvation and power in his name.

Concerning the thoughts you are having, you are right about the devil playing with your mind. Thats precisely how he comes to people, in their thought life, wanting you to dwell on the negative lying thoughts. Good thoughts make the bad thoughts go away. Nip them in the bud. When you realize you are thinking them, get up and resist it.

Gods word instructs you to take captive those thoughts and not allow them to remain. 2 corinthians 10:3 says, For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.
He tells you to pull down strongholds, thoughts that try to rule over you, tells you to take it captive as prisoner and cast the thought down, and bring it captive to what the Word of God says.
He also says in Philippians 4.8, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, think on these things.
The devil sends thoughts that he wants you to agree with, then those thoughts settle down in your heart. They are hurtful and destructive. God says Resist the devil and he will flee. Unforgiveness and anger can wreak havoc in your heart too. He will keep bringing up how someone hurt you and it brings awful pain. Release and forgive that person. God says if you don’t forgive your brother his sins, he wont forgive yours.

Bottom line is the gospel is Good News. Jesus paid your penalty in full for sin, and rose to break the power of death over your life. Its not about what you do for God, its all about what he did for YOU. No more struggling. No more fear, when you feel fearful, get rid of it. Have FAITH. God is with you. Don’t allow the enemy to lie and keep lying. You are in charge of your thoughts. When you hear the lies, blast him back with the truth, the Word of God. And God made you WORTHY to receive eternal life, salvation and answers to prayer. When you don’t know what else to do, call on Jesus name, if thats all you can get out. Say Jesus, Jesus, Jesus help! He loves you SO MUCH little girl!

      1. Thank you for your words! When I pray out and ask God to cast out Satan and his words, I still feel trapped. I feel like I’m in this battle to where Satan wants me to stop believing, he wants me to believe that I can enjoy all of the pleasures in my life through him rather than through God. I don’t believe that one bit and will not back down. From what I’ve read and heard, what I’m dealing with his the Spirit of Heaviness. When I pray onto the Lord to cast it out, it still sits inside of me, makes me feel like I can’t be this happy person that I was a few days ago. Just a few days ago, I felt alive in God’s Word. Everything I did was fun and felt right. I felt hopeful and happy. Out of nowhere, I broke down crying and felt unwanted guilt and pain. All of these prayers, sermons, talks–I still feel the same, and it hurts. I’m calling out to God for help, but when I do, I feel wrong. What should I do if nothing changes? I’ve called out, filled my head with positive thoughts, etc. but nothing is working.

        1. Asha, are you born again? Do you have the Holy Spirit indwelling you? If you dont, ask God to FILL you with his Holy Spirit. When you have the Holy Spirit IN you, which is Christ in you, you have power. Who is stronger, God or the piddly spirit of heaviness who is trying to convince you that it has power over you? God has more power.

          Read these scriptures…..

If you have the Holy Spirit, its YOU who has POWER. The devil lies trying to make you think he has power over you. But the truth is, YOU HAVE POWER OVER HIM. Right now. He is just lying to deceive you and make you feel awful so you believe the feelings. But the TRUTH is, he has ALREADY delivered us from darknesses power….. as shown in Colossians 1.13. In fact, Jesus said I give you power OVER ALL THE POWER OF THE ENEMY.
Believe, know, understand, be convinced its YOU who has power over it.

If a guy comes knocking on your door saying he owns your car, you would tell him nope, I OWN IT, its mine. I have the title, the keys and its in my name. He keeps coming back trying to convince you its his by going and sitting in it and waving keys in front of your face. Sure feels awful, but the TRUTH is, its not his! The bible says, you shall KNOW THE TRUTH and the TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE.

When i realized, after years and years of depression and hopelessness, that i had power over him, i began to quote those scriptures aloud over and over, knowing i now had power over him! And it left instantly and hasnt been back. God has answered. He did it 2000 years ago, and we keep crying and begging for him to deliver us from that ugly power of darkness. Colossians 1 says he already did it! Believe it. And hes given you a SPIRIT OF POWER the word of God says….over ALL the power of the enemy. I had been waiting and waiting and waiting wondering why God wasnt answering me too. Until i realized what took place when i became a child of God. He has already given it to you. Its like asking God to save you from your sins and you keeping asking and asking. He is looking at you like, you do not understand what i have already done for you.

Asha, its like wondering who is stronger, the Holy Spirit indwelling you, or a creepy spirit coming to harrass you?
Theres no question, GOD has all power, and hes given you that power by His Spirit who indwells you. The devil is only lying to you. Know your place and stand firm once and for all. I posted those scriptures all over my house, but once i understood that God has given me power over ALL the power of the enemy, i believed it. I rejoiced and began to declare aloud through my house that God has given me a SPIRIT OF POWER……OVER ALLLLLL the power of the enemy. And thats when it left.

The devil hates the Word of God, he hates the truth, and the Word slays him like a sword. Speak aloud the Word in power and victory because it IS the truth. Once u understand is you who has the power, it will flee. Its just been lying to you to see if youll buy it, and its had you whimpering with your tail between your legs. I hope you are getting this. Because its so powerful, you will finally realize it doesnt have power over you.

You shall know the TRUTH, and the TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE.

    2. Wow this is exactly how I have been feeling. I hope things get better!

  12. Pray me the devil want to steal my husband`s job. He is not going to work work. He is Nceba Xati .
    Loretta xATI

    1. Dear Loretta,

God has you and your husband in the palm of his hand. The devil is nothing compared to the Almighty. If your husbands job comes to an end, God has something else in store for him. God knows exactly whats going on. He will provide for your every need. I will pray he doesnt lose his job, but if he does, get ready because youre going to see Gods miraculous hand. The Lord will open another door. Hes sooooooo big, he will bless you. Get ready for a miracle. Watch and see.

Isaiah 41:17 When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water……… That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the Lord hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.

  13. “Those comforts which come from God dispose the heart to, and enlarge the heart in, thanksgivings to God. Whatever we have the joy of God must have the praise and glory of.” Matthew Henry
While I believe in medication for depression, having experienced depression and my children, as well, there’s no doubt in my mind that when we have God’s promises from His Word in our minds, praise on our lips, and hope in our hearts that God enlarges, there’s just not a whole lot of room left for continued depression and sorrow.

  14. I strongly disagree with the premise of your article. Depression is definitely NOT a spirit. It has NOTHING to do with the phrase “spirit of heaviness”. The spirit of heaviness is actually a state of discouragement, not an actual spirit.

Depression isn’t something we can lift ourselves out of. We can’t simply pray our way out of this state. True, reading God’s word and spending time in prayer is very important is maintaining good and healthy routines in your daily life. Make sure you get enough sleep at the same times every day, have a healthy and varied diet, exercise daily, plan daily activities and follow through on at least one of them. Most important of all, don’t isolate yourself. These things will over time overcome the depression. This is my personal experience. Even the Bible supports this. Just look at Elijah the prophet. The Lord made him sleep by the brook and sent ravens with food, all to drive his discouragement away..

Can simple physical solutions drive away an evil spirit? I don’t think so. When you state that depression is a spirit, you make everything into a battle. The poor souls experiencing depression are already tired and weary. Making them believe that depression is a spirit they have to fight is likely to drive them into condemnation when God doesn’t send a magical cure.

Have you even considered that depression and other mental illnesses are simply trials? That it is a an individual state of suffering that some of us are called to endure? Suffering is definitely a part of our calling as disciples of Jesus. Most christians suffering with somatic disease aren’t delivered or healed, simply because the sovereign will of God has something greater in store for them through enduring the suffering. So why should mental illness – like depression, bipolar disorder, ocd, panic attacks etc – be understood as something completely? If your body can be sick, why not your mind? Why make it into a spiritual battle?

The premise of your article offends me on behalf of the many people suffering from mental disorders and who don’t experience healing through their “battle” against “a spirit of heaviness”.

    1. You said…..Depression is definitely NOT a spirit. It has NOTHING to do with the phrase “spirit of heaviness”. The spirit of heaviness is actually a state of discouragement, not an actual spirit.
Gods word says it IS a spirit. In fact he calls it a SPIRIT. He did not say it was a “state of discouragement.” You changed what is written.

You said…..We can’t simply pray our way out of this state.
Yes, you most certainly can pray because God is a deliverer and cares about our souls and he does answer prayer.

You said….maintaining good and healthy routines in life, enough sleep, a healthy and varied diet, exercise daily, plan daily activities and follow up. Most important of all, don’t isolate yourself. These things will over time overcome the depression. This is my personal experience.
That, Thomas, was YOUR experience. There are millions who do that and cannot overcome it. I did that for 30+ years and absolutely nothing changed as I fought for my life… until the power of God delivered me.

You said….you make everything into a battle. The poor souls experiencing depression are already tired and weary. Making them believe that depression is a spirit they have to fight is likely to drive them into condemnation when God doesn’t send a magical cure.
If you read Gods word, you will know we are in a battle. There is no striving and tiredness or condemnation for those who believe God WILL deliver them. He is the one who accomplished victory on our behalf. The work was already done by Christ, who has already set us FREE. Its by FAITH in Gods word that set me free in an INSTANT after a grueling 35 years of striving.

You said….Have you even considered that depression and other mental illnesses are simply trials? That it is a an individual state of suffering that some of us are called to endure? Suffering is definitely a part of our calling as disciples of Jesus.
God is not the author of horrific pain and suffering, nor is he an OPPRESSOR. The devil is the oppressor and God doesnt leave you without hope for years and years in mental pain and anguish. Discern between the mightiness of God and the cruelty of a spiritual enemy who tries to take your life. The word of God says the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace…. not fear, oppression, hopelessness and unending pain.

You said…..The premise of your article offends me on behalf of the many people suffering from mental disorders and who don’t experience healing through their “battle” against “a spirit of heaviness”.
Gods power in delivering souls from pain, anguish and hopelessness should not offend you. It is an utter JOY to Christian believers to get set free from years of torment. I was set free instantly after years of wondering why God would lay such cruel pain on me with no way out. Until I found the truth….that He IS a deliverer and he already won the victory on our behalf.
I plan to share the gospel which means GOOD NEWS with all those affected by mental illness who will hear and believe in our Mighty Deliverer, Jesus Christ. Where there is mental illness, there is typically a spirit of fear. Gods word says in 1 Timothy 2.7, He has not given us a spirit of fear, but he has given us a SPIRIT OF POWER, of love, and a SOUND MIND. Where there is unsoundness of mind, victims are afraid and rightly so. It is very scary. Gods word shows you there he is not putting fearfulness on you. He calls it a SPIRIT of fear. He is correcting us saying, I have given you a SPIRIT of POWER, OF LOVE and a SOUND MIND. He is saying that is what comes from me.

For those who cannot overcome mental illness of depression and oppression and hopelessness, God himself offers salvation and deliverance. If treating your depression with fruits, vegetables, sleep and exercise worked for you, then that is wonderful. But for those who cannot find a way out, our God provides hope and salvation. He did for me, and countless others, and I praise Him for it. Its not a magical cure. He does not work by magic. It is the POWER OF GOD.

        1. Hello,
Could you please explain to me how exactly scripture overcomes depression? How does reading the bible heal depression? I don’t really understand the article.

          1. Heidi,
Reading Gods Word shows you His Will for you. The New Testament is an Everlasting Covenant God made with mankind, with you, through the death and resurrection of His Son. He promised Eternal Life to whoever would believe on His Son Jesus Christ. Jesus is called the Word of God. He also said, the words I speak to you are Spirit and they are LIFE. In fact it says the Word of God is living and active. Through reading his Word, he has provided numerous promises for you and all the benefits you have when you believe on Jesus.
New Testament or New Covenant is in effect an everlasting agreement God made with mankind. Now that he has sent His Son to die in our place paying our sin penalty in full, the promise is that you receive life because Jesus defeated death on your behalf. Now that he has secured your salvation, he shows you how to live your life in this world. He shows you what he will do for those who believe on Him. There are numerous promises how he will take care of you, provide for you, heal you, protect you, on and on.
The Word of God says that, “Faith comes by hearing and hearing comes by the Word of God.” It builds your faith so you can trust him, hear from him, walk in ways that are pleasing to Him. In fact, it says when the evil day comes and youre fighting the devil, he spells out the pieces of spiritual armor you are to use that protect you. One of those pieces of armor is the WORD OF GOD, and its called your sword…..It is called the Sword of the Spirit. So when the devil comes with his deceiving mind chatter to hurt you, you have Gods Word that you use against him. That word is the victory God gives you to stand firm and believe him. In fact, it is the sword or power of the Holy Spirit to slay the devil. Your thoughts are so important, God tells you to bring thoughts captive to Him, to the truth. Example, a thought comes that says, tell a lie, or temptation, or commit sin. God says take the thought captive and cast it down. Every time Jesus was tempted by the devil in the wilderness, he quoted the Word of God.
God will speak to your heart through reading the word. He will show you the TRUTH. He says, You shall know the TRUTH and the TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE. There are dozens of scriptures how he comforts you and encourages you and tells you how wonderfully he will be with you and not to be afraid. For whatever youre going through.
For depression, he provides hope and joy in telling you that he WILL answer you. To be strong in Him and the power of His Might. Hearing, reading, studying the scriptures build your faith. Jesus said when the Holy Spirit comes, he will remind you of all things I have spoken. The Word brings hope, peace, joy, life, and blessing. It allows you to see that, hey, God will do miraculous things for you. He says the Word of God is ALIVE. And it will go so deep into your spirit, you will know its Him speaking to you. They arent just dead words on a page.
I got healed of depression all of the sudden remembering his word that said, He DELIVERED US FROM THE POWER OF DARKNESS. When i realized he already did it,,,,past tense, he delivered us through the cross and resurrection, from the POWER of evil. It wasnt something he was going to do, he showed me he already delivered me when he gave His Son.
Another scripture he showed me was 2 Timothy 1.7….He has not given us a spirit of fear, but a SPIRIT OF POWER. I was set free the moment i realized i had power over oppression and depression, instead of it having power over me. For years i had prayed what is this dreadfulness? I had no idea that because of Jesus Christ and his work on the cross and his resurrection provided me that power. And it was mine! He wants you to KNOW the benefits of what he secured for you when he died and rose. As a child of God, you have been given blessings now that you have been reconciled to God by the giving of His Son. Its like having an enormous bank account, but you dont understand you have access to it.
He speaks to everyone through His Word. They arent just empty words. He will show you exactly what you need to know. He knows the deepest thoughts of your heart, and its His Word that will address those thoughts, cares and concerns.
This article shows when youre in a battle over your life, you better KNOW the TRUTH! Because when the devil comes to try and hurt you, you need to use the WORD to defeat him. The Power of the Holy Spirit shows up through using it, getting it deep in your heart and believing it. You stand your ground when the enemy comes to lie and beat the heck out of you. And you quote that word knowing that is what slays the enemy. Standing your ground in the evil day. Remember the parable of the seed and sower? The seed is the Word of God and it explains the four different types of hearts the seed or word falls on. Some were shallowly planted, some the birds of the air ate up because it was left on the top surface. God wants his Word to do deep down in your heart, so you hold it in your heart.
Depression, the heaviness and hopelessness that comes with it, is a very strong and overwhelming feeling. The only way to slay it once and for all is by understanding your right as a child of God and using the Word of God to slay the lie of depression. I am not talking about just having a bad day. I am talking about depression that zeroes in on you, telling you there is no hope and your life means nothing. That is the point you NEED the power of God, and its found in His Word!

            Proverbs 1.23
Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words to you.

            Proverbs 2.1
            My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;  So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou cry after knowledge, and lift up thy voice for understanding; If thou seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures;
Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

            Proverbs 4.20
My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.  Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are LIFE to those that find them, and HEALTH to all their flesh.

            1. Thank you so much, Anna’s. It is clearer to me now. Thank you for taking the time to explain it to me.

          2. Heidi,

If you’re the same girl who has battled depression since you were a child, I want to make sure you understand how to be saved, to be reconciled to God.

Everyone has sinned, and sin brings separation from God, eternal death.
God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to pay for our sins when he died on the cross. But Jesus did no wrong and didn’t deserve to die, it was OUR sins he died for. God raised Jesus from the dead in power and victory over death, for you and me. He made an everlasting covenant with whosoever would believe on Jesus, that he died for all their sins and rose from the dead to give them ETERNAL LIFE. You are no longer separated from God because his Son paid what YOU owed for sin. Instead he paid your death penalty and now you have the RIGHT to come boldly to the throne of God, knowing the blood of Jesus was shed for you and your price for sin has been paid. Because of Jesus, you are now reconciled to God, 100%.

The Bible says, ALL who call upon the name of the Lord (JESUS) shall be saved. If you are sorry for your sins and want to be reconciled to God, CALL on the Name of Jesus. God said if you believe in your heart God raised Jesus from the dead, you would be saved. That means you have eternal life…. you are saved from death and hell, and you now belong to God.

He said, If we know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more will our Heavenly Father give the HOLY SPIRIT to those who ask him? After you call on the Name of Jesus, ask God to FILL YOU WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. That is Gods Spirit, the Spirit of LIFE. He will fill you and make his home in your spirit, in your heart. He will never leave you or forsake you. You now have the Spirit of Life in you, also called the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Power, the Spirit of Truth, The Comforter.

The devil is a bully who comes to lie, steal, kill and destroy. He tries to use his power over people to hurt them. The only trick he has when he comes around is a lie. If he can get you to believe it, he sets up shop in your thoughts. That’s why it’s so Important to know what Gods Word says. God is now on your side, and not against you, he loves you immensely, but the devil is your adversary who comes around trying to puff up his power over you.

But WAIT! You just called on the Name of Jesus to save you and asked God to fill you with His Holy Spirit. THAT IS the SPIRIT OF POWER that DEFEATS the devil. You now have POWER over ALL the power of the devil. Because God IN YOU is way stronger. No longer do you have to be intimidated by the heaviness of depression and gloom and sadness because he is just LYING to you, trying to make you believe HE has power over you. He is only lying to you. It’s YOU who has power OVER HIM now.

Know it in your heart, believe it, rejoice in it. How do you take down a lie? With the TRUTH. Jesus said, you shall KNOW the truth, and the TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE.

God is called the God of all Hope. Depression tries to steal every bit of hope there is. Thank God, you now have the victory in Jesus Christ the SAVIOR of the world.
The moment you believe the gospel, you are seated in heavenly places in Christ. You are now a child of God. Gods word says in the book of Hebrews to come BOLDLY to his throne, through faith in the blood of Jesus, that cleansed you from all sin.
His word says, if we do sin, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 70 x 7 he is so steadfast to forgive. He is faithful and promised to be your God. He says just seek him first in life, and you won’t have to worry about your life. He will provide for your needs. Pray and seek the Lord. You can pour your heart out to Him.

You have a new master who gives you peace and joy, no more hurt, pain, sorrow and depression. Understand you have the power of God dwelling inside of you. He has marked you as His by giving you the Holy Spirit.

Don’t give depression one inch of a foothold. Know, rejoice, and stand firm that Almighty God dwells in you. Jesus said, Behold, I GIVE YOU POWER to tread on serpents and scorpions and over ALL the power of the enemy and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Say in the NAME OF JESUS, I cast you OUT and OFF of me depression. I have a new master that dwells in me, God himself.

IT IS YOU THAT NOW HAS POWER OVER IT!

I GIVE YOU POWER JESUS SAID OVER ALL HIS POWER.
GOD HAS GIVEN US A SPIRIT OF POWERRRRRRR.
JESUS SAID HOU SHALL RECEIVE POWER WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT COMES UPON YOU.
HE HAS DELIVERED US FROM THE POWER OF DARKNESS.

            1. Hello Annas,
I am not the same Heidi, but I needed to hear what you had to say. Thank you.

            2. My husband is going through major depression, this new person he has become is unknown to me. He talks about negative thoughts and his wish of being dead, he has not attempted suicide, he stated he doesn’t want to hurt himself.
My husband was physically abused as a toddler by his father at one point his mom divorced him, all the siblings have seen or been treated for mental conditions. My husband was loving, caring, the head of the household, hard working until six months ago. He went through surgeries for chron’s disease and reversal ileostomy.
We have seen psychiatric, hospital, meds, therapy, prayer intervention but nothing has worked so far. What else is left to do… my husband accepted the Lord as his savior before he lost his mind but doesn’t remember, I would love to hear your advice. Thank you!

            3. Brenda,
It broke my heart to read what your husband is going through. Its so hurtful to you as his wife to sit and watch it. It reminds me of those situations where you are totally helpless to fix it, especially after youve tried everything. When I get to the point where I am completely exhausted, distressed and cannot change the situation, is the time when i go before God and say, I cant do this Lord. I completely hand this enormous burden over to you.

I have found the best place to be in, is when you have lost all strength to deal with it and you come to the end of your flesh trying to fix it. The apostle Paul when I am weak, then I am strong that the power of Christ may rest on me. Therefore, I will boast in my weakness. Its at that time when your flesh cannot fix it, that the Lord seems to rescue me. I would say, Lord this is too much. Please take over by your Spirit. If you can get your husband to pray with you and both of you go before the Lord, and pour out your heart asking for Him to rescue you. I would declare over his life and yours that He has given you a Spirit of Power and also a sound mind, as 2 Timothy 1.7 says. We rely on your spirit God. We have no other Savior. And lay it out before Him.

Declare that God has given you power in Christ over ALL the power of the enemy. And if you see things start to escalate thats too hard to handle, thats when I would stand firm and praise Him in the Name of Jesus that He is with you and KNOW that God has delivered you from the “power of darkness” including sickness and mental health issues. The enemy doesnt get to flaunt his lying power, because you KNOW who you are in Christ. Thank you Father God that you dwell in me and you defeated and delivered me from the power of darkness. I would say, no you dont devil……its ME who has power over YOU!
The Holy Spirit has way more power than him. I would simply call on the name of Jesus because the Word says there is salvation in no other. There is no other name given to man under heaven by which we must be saved. Drive out the enemy with the WORD OF GOD. I pray for not only his physical health but his mental health too. I would simply stand firm in the Word of God which God gave you, calling it the Sword of the Spirit. I would get your husband to call aloud on the Name of Jesus …saying Jesus, Jesus, i call on your name….save me Son of the Living God, my high priest, healer, Savior and Mighty Deliverer. And for you sitting back having to watch and listen to it must be overwhelming. If your husband isnt on board and has given up hope, then you stand firm in faith and without fear, thanking God that he HAS GIVEN you a spirit of power. The devils a liar. He wants to make you believe he has more power than you and will keep flaunting it until you put your foot down and realize and know, that its you who has the Holy Spirit which is wayyyyyy more powerful than him. Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. God is with you. Tell the devil to split from your household once and for all. I would pray for a flat out miracle of healing for your husband. God is huge and miracles are his business. Its who he is. And i would believe BIG, BIG. Hes a very big God! Be convinced that you know Him and who He is and who lives in you. Dont let the enemy push you around, even for a minute. Get out the Word of God and declare who you are in Christ and that its YOU who has power over him.

          3. God healed me from depression when I accepted him into my life. I had depression since I was thirteen year old I struggled with it like 9 years. The second time I stepped into church the Lord healed me. Praise God!
“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
            2 Corinthians 3:17

“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.”
            John 6:63

“But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.”
            Psalm 1:2

“Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts.”
            Jeremiah 15:16

      1. Yes and mental illness is a spirit and it cones from the devil. The devil is deciwng your mind about the truth of it. I am the living witness of apirit of depression, syicide and addiction, trauma and all you can mention but because of the grace of the Lord And the blood of Jesus, I am now free and witnessing to many. Read the New Testament and you will see the miracles and works and wonders of Jesus!

      2. Amen! Annas. I stand in agreement with everything you just said. God bless you.

    2. reading Gods word definitely works for me when feeling depressed or heaviness.

    3. Today, before reading this article, I went through a depressed state in the morning. I thank God that I conquered, before I was led to read this article.

My short story. I woke up this morning with slight pains in my head. Then, I decided to sleep back, so that I could feel better. Just before sleeping, I wanted to increase the speed of the standing fan using its remote. The remote fell on the floor and got bad. This may not sound as a big issue to you, but it was an issue for me.

How am I supposed to explain to my friend who presently shelters me, who pays the bills, and provides food in the house; that the fan’s remote got bad somehow. Truth be told, I thought of lying coz of the mess I had gotten myself into.

I got worried and then depressed, coz I don’t have a job yet. All this mess would not have happened in the first place, if I had a job. The devil is a smart guy, but Christ has been made wisdom for me. Then I prayed about the issue. How am I supposed to fix a technical issue with prayer? Hmm.

I laid back on the couch to sleep. Before I dozed off, scriptures kept popping up in my mind, reminding me of who I am in Christ Jesus, and how everything is possible in God. I woke up, took my mind off it, did the dishes. Then, I sat back to fix the remote before my friend’s arrival. It dawned on me that there was a missing piece. I searched for it, found it and then fixed the remote back. I thank God greatly, coz he saved me from shame.

Depression may not sound like a spirit from an intellectual perspective. I quite agree with physical exercises and its likes, coz I engage in them to clear out my head sometimes. However, If depression can cause a person to take his/her own life, do you still think that its just a mental thing?

I just hope that we don’t become too wise in our own understanding, coz we have become wise and carnal enough in our thoughts. I pray the Holy Spirit breathes upon our minds all, coz earthly wisdom cannot withstand or be compared to the foolishness of God!

      DEPRESSION IS A SPIRIT.

  15. Pray for me. I am fighting a spirit of depression and fighting for my husband, who is dealing with this too. We have been in an off and on again debate about where we live. (We are in a relatively new area.) It is very difficult as I have had peace the whole time about where we are, but he resents me as sometimes he believes we should return to our old area. He has not been happy for long anywhere we have been and I believe there is something deep God wants to get to in his heart.

It feels lonely in my home right now, even when he is home with our family. I feel like we have been circling this mountain so long and my heart is heavy. I keep praying over our home and believing God and it gets hard at times, but I keep doing it. I just wish he could rest in Jesus and trust Him to bring to pass His will.

    1. Standing, sounds like he isnt happy where you now live. If he resents you, thats a problem. Have you prayed about it? If that would make him happy, i would reconsider. Does he know the Lord? You want peace in your family.
Just love him. Love never fails. I would not let him think youre being stubborn just because its what you want. Its not worth it. You want peace in your home. So hard! I will pray too!

    2. You can never win the battle against something that isn’t a spirit. Do all the spiritual activities that are described in the article, but don’t neglect all the physical things, like restoring a healthy sleep pattern, a healthy diet, regular excercise, daily activity and goals and maintaining regular fellowship with christian friends and in your church. Don’t isolate yourself, but get support from those you trust. Through this your condition will get better, I can promise you that.

      1. You doubting Thomas doesn’t believe in the true power of God.
I am in medical field and I believe truly God can deliver people from all the disease including mental illness as I am one of those few that Jesus set free.
You need to study the life of Jesus. And stop listening to your flesh and to the the devil lying to you that depression is not a spirit. Plead the blood of Hesus.

    3. Dear Standing on His Promises,

I understand what you are going through as I, my husband and my family relocated 6 years ago. It was a very difficult time to say the least. I was depressed and my husband was ok.

All I can offer you is this….moving is a whole life event that shifts from what you knew “familiarity” to “unfamiliar territory”. It’s the unknown. It’s an adjustment and there are challenges that come with that.

I don’t know what lead you to move, but I hope it was for the right reason. I would encourage you to talk with your husband and try to listen to his side of things. You are at peace…but it seems as though he does not feel the same. Impasses breaks down communication. What was is the goal with this move. What outcome are you both wanting?

I pray for the both of you.

  16. I’ve lost all my jobs, my bills are pilling up , my anxiety is going crazy. I’ve helped so many people in my career and now when I need help no one.
Please pray for me and my family .. i wish this depression away .. I repent and please forgive lord
I find myself losing faith at times .. but many around me tell me to push forward .. I know that’s the lord telling me I’m here..

    Please pray for me

    1. Ramiro,
Do not fret. Are you born again? When many people say they are losing their faith, they mean just generally believing in God. Do you trust and and know that you are in right standing with God because of the sacrifice and resurrection of his Son alone? If so, you are in the best place you can be, ever.

When all your strength is gone and there is nothing you can do to rescue yourself is when the power of God rescues you. I have found when I have exhausted all possibilities and finally realize I cannot save myself, and i completely hand it over to Him, is precisely when I see him swoop in out of nowhere. Thats when I get ready for a miracle. Paul the apostle said, When I am weak, then I am strong. I will boast in my weaknesses that the power of Christ may rest on me. He said do not worry about your life. God is faithful who said, He will meet all our needs according to His riches in glory.

Look at this verse…. Isaiah 41: 17 When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. 18…. I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water….20 That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the Lord hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.

He is still on the throne, and he is not taken by surprise. He has all you need and he is so very abundant.
Read Psalm 78, it is powerful and explains all he did for the Israelites, over and over again, yet they still did not trust in Him or believe Him for His MIGHTY WORKS. And it says he was wroth with them because He kept proving himself again and again. Start thanking and praising him for his big, powerful, and might works. He is God Almighty and rescues when there is nothing in sight, out of nowhere. So its okay if you do not see anything within 1,000 miles because that is precisely how he works. Rely and trust in His faithfulness and power. You are in the perfect place for a true miracle. We are told to come to the throne of grace into the holy of holies with confidence and faith through the blood of Jesus….. reliance on the blood of Jesus that he will in fact hear you….the blood of the everlasting covenant that He will never break. My prayer to Him is that he teach you just who He is because that will remove all fear and doubt, and give you complete confidence of His saving power.

    2. Ramiro,

God got you.. You have favor. Sometimes lost offers you great gains.. Contact all your bill collectors explained the lost of your job and see if they can either postpone or make the payments smaller. I’m praying for you and definitely have been in your shoes..

    3. Pam. Pray as suicidal and low. My husband is full of fear it affects me. Pray there is fighting in my sons home. Pray it changes.

        1. Anna,

I saw your name and thought i posted that article link to CBN, but realized you are also named Anna. What a wonderful testimony you have. The Lord is AWESOME. God bless you!
          Anna/Annas

      1. Sylvia!
Hi. God is a God of miracles! You may feel low and lost, but he know exactly whats going on with you. He will use what was bad and turn it around for your good. Jesus is your shepherd, and he has you right in the palm of his hand. Do not fret, He is with you no matter how you’re feeling. He said he would never leave you nor forsake you. He loves you more than anyone on this earth, and he will hear your cry when you pray, and give you the hope, deliverance, and power you need. There is power in the name of Jesus, and if you call on His name, you will be saved. He is alive and will answer you. When youre in desperate pain, just say…..Jesus Jesus Jesus, call on his name. The bible says there is salvation in no other. There is no other name given to man under heaven by which we must be saved.
Whatever you are going through,,,,financial struggles, health issues, depression, relationship issues, he will answer you. I pray for a miracle for you. He is a very very big God and can handle whatever is happening. Dont be afraid. Just begin to praise Him that he is God. He wants to show you just how strong he is. When youre at the bottom or at the end of your wits, is when he swoops in to rescue you. Psalm 107 shows how he rescues those who have no one to help them, are at their wits end, draw near the gates of death,,,,,how they cry out to the Lord and he saves them. Dont be afraid that you dont have the power in yourself. He wants to be your salvation, your deliverer, and your power. The best times i have seen him rescue me, were when i had absolutely no strength left in myself. He isnt a slouch, he WILL rescue all who come to Him in faith.
Tell Him, I need a BIG miracle here. Its who He is! He is HUGE! And ABLE! That is what I am praying for you. Be encouraged, He loves you sooooo much. You will see! XOX

    4. I can relate to what you are saying. I have had several instances where things have gone sideways. God is taking care of you, trust him and remember proverbs 3-6
Trust in the Lord and lean not on thine own understanding. In all ways acknowledge Him that he may direct thy path.

    5. Yes, when one needs help, none is near, only God is with us.
3 ‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and [b]mighty things, which you do not know.’
      JEREMIAH 33
      Blessing from Mexico city.

    6. I found Brother Carlos Oliveira and Pastor Fernando Perez on Youtube got me through the night and day with their deliverance prayers on the subject. Then I asked my church for prayer ministry and had that, then I went to an African pastor as they are hot on deliverance and then asked Dr Bob Larson on youtube for exorcism and sometimes go to a church in London who do one to one deliverance after their service- these things helped me as well as telling the Holy Spirit how I felt who guided my path
God bless, I pray for you – Lucyna

Ps. keep repeating a scripture on anxiety – ‘Shut up devil’ by Kyle Winkler has a phone app with themes like fear, depression, anxiety, and scriptures to match for us to say out loud

  17. I struggled with a demon of depression on and off from age 15, I am 62 years old now. A few years ago I was at my lowest point when my husband and I were both laid off from work. I just wanted to lay in bed, I felt so helpless, I just wanted to die. I called a local church and asked for someone to pray for me. The Lord directed me to the perfect person, she prayed for me and I was delivered from depression. It’s a wonderful miracle. My advice to those struggling with depression would be to reach out to someone that is a strong believer. Stay in the Word, Surround yourself with Godly people.

Its your right as a child of God.

If you are NOT quite sure you are saved and have the Holy Spirit….call on the Name of Jesus, repenting of your sins believing he died and rose from the dead to save you. Ask him to fill you with his Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Power, and he will do it. Believe him.

      1. Pam,
I will pray for you. Fear is a real enemy that can manifest in being afraid things wont change, anxiety, depression, hopelessness and also anger. Scripture says, God has not given us a spirit of fear. So you know its not God doing it to you or your family. The devil is a roaring lion, seeking WHOM HE MAY devour. “Whom he may devour” means those who dont know any better and allow him to do it.
God has armed you with the most powerful weapon of all, faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior, the power of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. He will use even bad things and turn them around for your good. He wants you to KNOW who you are as a child of God. Huge, huge lesson I learned as i wandered why this had been happening to me.
Fear is a bully that makes you afraid and tries to get to you through persistence, but really all he is doing is lying to you. No one has more power than God, yet the devil will tell you theres no hope. Again, a lie.
When you know God sent Jesus to save you and youve received the infilling of the Holy Spirit, fear doesnt stand a chance. You simply stand against it, unmoved, knowing, knowing, knowing that the Holy Spirit dwelling in you is much more powerful than the enemy. You have the power of God living in you now. Stop letting him lie to you. Know that you know, and dont budge. Dont give him even a foothold, say no you dont liar. Because its not the truth. God said he has given you a spirit of POWER over ALL the power of the enemy.
Use the Word of God, the truth, against the lie. Jesus said You shall know the TRUTH and the TRUTH will set you FREE. The Word of God is the SWORD of the Holy Spirit that slays the lie. Dont be affected by the fear coming through your husband. Recognize what it is and pray against it. Be strong in the Lord and the power of His Might. One of the pieces of armour you have in Ephesians 6 is a Sword, the Word of God. If you arent using it, youre losing a battle. The Sword he gives you is his word, its the truth, and it has power to slay the enemy. Its the only piece of armour that slays the enemy, all other pieces of armor listed protect you from his attacks, but the Sword is what actually kills the enemy.
The TRUTH shall set you free.

      1. Heavenly Father, I pray for Morgan and ask you to take control by your Spirit, that you would give Morgan complete rest in you. You know whats happening and I thank you that you said you would meet All of our needs. Youre so faithful to us and said you would never leave or forsake us. I hand this struggle over to you and place this in your hands. Your great, loving, and abundant blessing me on Morgan as we look to you. By the everlasting covenant you made in the blood and resurrection of your beloved Son.

Morgan, sometimes struggles come when we try to do things in our human strength. Ive found the most powerful times when God has come through is when i have lost all my own strength, and finally say, God, I cant do this. And then I take my striving and hand of flesh completely off of it….. as in let go and let God. When i am at the end of my rope in human strength is when I see God move in power. Paul the apostle said I will boast in my weaknesses that the Power of Christ may rest on me. Take over Holy Spirit!

  18. I’m numb depressed I can’t feel anything nor hear God or any of my thoughts I need help

    1. Honey, I will pray for you. I don’t believe that’s what God wants for you at all!!! Do you have believers that can surround you and lift you up when you are so low. That’s what the community of faith is all about!!!

      1. Lizzie,
God HAS saved you as you asked. He said to ask ANYTHING in His name and He will DO IT! You need to understand that a spirit has convinced you to accept those bad things that are happening to you rather than TRUSTING that GOD has DONE as He promised. Jesus DOES love you and so do the rest of us on here. Waking up is a gift and the enemy is trying to actually kill you. You MUST BELIEVE that God has accomplished what you have asked for. He is waaaaay more powerful than anything the enemy can throw at you.
2 Timothy says: God has not given me a spirit of fear, but he has given me a SPIRIT OF POWER, of love and a SOUND MIND. If you are a Christian who has the Holy Spirit indwelling you, YOU ALREADY HAVE a Spirit of Power. Its not something he is going to do in the future, he had already given it to you. Past tense. Tell the devil you are DONE believing him and turn IN FAITH to Jesus who is your savior.

    2. Spirit of heaviness that is oppressing Honey, I take authority over you in Jesus name. Come out of her! Come out of her and do not enter again. I now bind you in heaven and on earth, as God has authorised me to do.

Honey, I loose the atoning work of Christ upon you. By his stripes YOU ARE HEALED! Heaven and earth may fall away, but his word endures forever – the word of the Lord is LIVING and ACTIVE and sharper than any two-edged sword. Daughter of Abraham, you are God’s beloved. The creator of the universe calls you by name – He has numbered every hair on your head. He loves you with a reckless and everlasting love, and longs to heal you and tenderly embrace you. He has bourne your suffering upon His body – cast all your cares upon Him. He cares for you and is with you – may His face shine upon you forever. May He prosper you and keep you, giving you a future and a hope!

God bless you, beautiful daughter of Abraham. Xxx

      1. Suzi, your prayer is beautiful. I just prayed it for my son who is seriously depressed. Thank you and God Bless You!

    3. I had a panic attack and felt the spirit of heaviness trying to attack me, I felt so helpless, I am only 21 and I try so hard to do the right thing but I’ve been running from God, and now I’m tired I broke down today and prayed in the car for god to please heal me, to make me better, and to take the lead because I cannot do it on my own! But I say this to say, you will overcome and you will here gods voice, God tested my faith tonight with this panic attack. I’m so excited to go get prayed for in a couple hours at church and to come up with a prayer plan and a life plan! Because I wanna be prepared when Jesus comes, there’s a war and the devil is trying to lead us to believe that we’re so far into depression and anxiety that we can’t even think about that’s what God is here for, he sent his only son to die on the cross for our sins. I’m praying for you ❤️?? You got this battle

  19. I struggle every day everything hurts emotionally and physically I am so tired of it everyone who has claimed to love me has betrayed me and hurt me family friends literally everyone I am alone and so empty and void of any happiness in life the thought of waking up tomorrow makes me as sad the fear that at almost 38 I have nothing and never will haunts me no place to go and rest my soul I feel like all my edges are jagged and fragile it’s a struggle for me to even draw a breath anymore I’ve prayed and prayed and begged God to save me from this so far he hasn’t I just want to go home to him now I have for a very long time I know I was saved because I felt him Pierce my heart and soul and I am beyond grateful for his grace and mercy but I am suffocating and drowning down here and I don’t know how much longer I can hold on

    1. Bless you Linzie,
I pray that God pours out his love into your heart….that he shows you how much he loves you… that he teaches you to see yourself through his eyes.
I too have suffered on and off for many years with feelings of self doubt, self worth, hatred towards myself, but I know that only stems from trauma that I experienced in childhood.
I gave my life to Christ 10 years ago….I’m now 56…and I’ve hung in there, thick and thin.
Just know that there are people who are praying for you, who love you and as a brother in Christ, I love you too.
I pray the peace that transcends all understanding be with you this day. I bind anything that is not of Christ in you, under the foot of the cross. I bind depression and I command it to leave you, I bind the spirit of abandonment from you in the name of Jesus and command any further action of the enemy null and void.
In return I pray that the light of God floods into your heart and mind and I ask God to comfort you in his grace and love.
I pray God renews your mind and brings joy in the place of despair.
You are a wonderful child of God Linzie, made in his image. Be strong and take courage that others are in this with you.
      Peace be with you.
      Simon

    2. I am praying for you in the mighty name of Jesus I rebuke any strong hold of depression I speak that you are healed and whole In the mighty name of Jesus please do not feel alone there are people that care about youI am one who doesn’t even know you but I completely understand how you feel I have been fighting depression for years

    3. Hey Linzie, I am not sure if this is for you or not. But sometimes God puts a thought in my mind and thought I would go with it. I noticed your comment and an image of my devotional on my phone popped into my mind. So here is the devotional I read this morning.

“But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified, the Lord of glory” 1 Corinthians 2:7-8 NKJV

The devil thought he defeated Jesus through the cross. Yet, by the hidden wisdom of God, the cross was the way made for our salvation. The devil thought Jesus was ruined, but the cross was used to cause Jesus to reign. Satan didn’t see it coming and had no idea he set up his own defeat.

Let this be a reminder of how awesome God is. He will show you no matter what it looks like; He is always in control. He has hidden wisdom for your situation and is always steps ahead of your adversary. If you remain in faith, He will show you Who He is and what He has ordained for you.

Just when it seems like you will see defeat and failure, when it seems like the devil will ruin you, God will use it to make you better, take you higher and cause you to reign. When what you’ve gone through appears wouldn’t have any benefit at all in your life, like making the greatest chess move, God is going to bring you great victory.

“Come up higher. Come up higher, and then you will see. I am working it together for your eternal victory”, says the Lord.”

Prayer: Father, I give You all the praise and glory right now! I’m excited and encouraged today. You have hidden wisdom operating in my life. You know exactly what You are doing. You will make something out of all that I’ve been through. Let it break forth. Help me to remain in faith and walk out my purpose. Continue to shape me in the image of Your Son. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

      Study: John 1:12, 1 Corinthians 2:1-10, Acts 4:12

    4. Linzie, Hold on to Jesus. My son has explained his feelings in very much the same way you have. The devil is at work knowing his time is short. Please hold on to Jesus as Joseph held on to the LORD when he suffered for years in prison not knowing if God had completely forgotten about His promises to him. When doubt and fear must have come in like a flood… BUT God had His eye ever on Joseph even when he thought maybe he was abandoned. God was allowing him to experience this for a purpose. Perhaps the LORD is allowing you to experience this for a great ministry in the future. Perhaps the LORD is well aware of the people who will come your way in the future who will need to hear from someone who has been there, and who has held on to the only One that was left to hold, and has a testimony of His glorious power and grace. Please know that you are loved by Jesus Christ our Holy Savior. May He grant you rest from your suffering. May He open your eyes to His heavenly perspective and bring you great comfort. Amen.

    5. Linzie-

  20. I’ve had depression and anxiety since I can remember as young as 3years old ?

    1. Author

Heidi – I am praying for you. I love you. God loves you. I don’t know why you have had to deal with this, except that it is darkness and not from the God of Heaven. Again, I love you. Rex

  21. My LORD. I have so many people pulling for you and praying for you in the name of Jesus.

  22. I have struggled with suicidal thoughts for nearly two years. My sleep is disturbed and sometimes I will wake up in the night with these thoughts. Even if I sleep well I usually have them in the morning. Today I have had thoughts of suicide and despair all day. One thing I see from some of those who posted here is that they are tired. This is true with me also. There is no rest from these feelings, and the desire for suicide is actually the desire to rest. If I knew there were a drug that would give me a week long vacation from depression and suicidal thoughts I’d take it. But there is no drug for that. In fact, I no longer see my psychiatrist because no medication he prescribed was working.

I have been through deliverance from demonic spirits for this. I have developed more scriptural depth and I am careful how I speak about the problem because you can speak things into existence both negative and positive. In Jesus’ name I believe I am healed of depression. However, I don’t see the promise yet fulfilled in my life. But I am holding on to what I believe God says and did at the Cross for my deliverance.

This is all I can do now.

    1. I love you Tom. I know how you feel. I have struggled with this spirit for all my life. I have been delivered from suicidal thoughts….. but still and my struggling with the spirit of heaviness. We must lay down our flesh and fast and pray. Just know I’m you have my prayers I know how you feel but God knows fully. You are loved brother loved more than you know. I pray He touch you and embrace you with his love.

    2. I love you brother. Blessed are the poor in spirit for he will deliver us. He will lift us. Let us trust and obey Him.

    3. I am praying for you keep speaking gods word in Jesus name I rebuke any strongholds of depression in your life keep reaching for Jesus he will never leave you or for sake you

    4. Hello well i deal with depression and anxiety and take medication and see my psychiatrist. I think my problem is that i feel into emotions with a girl i was sleeping with. I found out she has slept with lots of men. I feel into temptation and believe i was in some soultie with the woman i slept with. I was baptized over 9 years ago and maybe five years ago ive battled with depression and anxiety and suicidal thoughts. I believe it’s because of some sin we have done that may have cause us to be in this state. I believe this problem we have is spiritual. Remember the bible says that we need to renew our minds and not conform to the pattern of this world. I believe if u stay obedient to the word the truth will set us free. Pray without ceasing. Seek god’s face daily and i believe in his time he will make his deliverance. And if you still feel suicidal also seek medical help. And be anxious for nothing that’s all i can say for now. Walk in the spirit and you won’t gratify the desires of the flesh. God bless you.

      1. Well said, Israel. I agree this depression is so often spiritual and these unclean spirits are tied to sexual sin. This sort of sin is so prevalent today, especially with the internet. Thank you for sharing your heart and thoughts. I pray it will give others hope that in obedience to God they will find rest. Jesus says come to Me all who labor and are heavy laden and you will find rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. That yoke is a shared burden with Christ Himself! The Lord is gracious and compassionate, isn’t He..

    5. I’m really tired. I just want to die. I feel like God doesn’t love me. I feel like I’m so irrelevant to him, like he has a thousand other people on his mind. I feel like I’m so stubborn. I hate myself. I hate my life. I don’t even know why I’m here. It’s a struggle to simply get out of bed. I don’t have people who love me. And I’m a pest to a lot of people. I make a lot of mistakes. And hurt the people that love me. I ruin everything. I’m failing in school right now. I’m a freshman and I go to very expensive school. I’m not sure how I’m supposed to tell my single mother that I dropped the ball or that I didn’t pass my FIRST semester. I just got here and I’m already letting her down. I just want to die. I can’t handle this burden on my chest or this heaviness. It felt good to just unload here. Can someone just life me up in your prayers. Not like I even believe anything will happen. But it’s a better chance of something happening since God loves you more than me. And actually listens to you.

      1. Chi-
Your mom will love you no matter what, even if you fail. God loves you even when you fail. We ALL fail and make lots of mistakes. That’s what humans do. 🙂 As for hurting people who love you, if its intentional, STOP. If it’s accidental, apologize and go on trying to never hurt them again. Before I knew Jesus, I hated myself too. I hated the life that I had and the choices that had put me there but Jesus said “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest”. Jesus says, come to Him as the ruined mess you are right now. With all of your faults and shortcomings and warts and all. Come to Him and tell Him that you NEED Him; you NEED a savior because it’s too hard by yourself. Pray that simple prayer with all of your heart and THEN … TRUST HIM. The moment you believe that He is the SON OF GOD who came down as the perfect sacrifice and paid God’s FULL acceptable penalty for sin, you are a new creature. A child of God. And from then on, He will keep you and guide you and be WITH you through anything and everything. Chi, dont be stubborn; turn right now to the ONLY one who can and will help you. And then be well in your would knowing that to God, you have been made righteous and perfect by the blood sacrifice of His Son. Bless you!

      2. Chi,

God loves YOU… and not just a little. For God SOOOOO loved the world, he gave His Only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, should NOT perish, but have EVERLASTING LIFE. In fact it doesnt just say he loves us, it says he SOOOOOO loved us. I want to make sure you understand the gospel and how to be saved. He will rescue you. He is faithful and said Whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord (JESUS) SHALL BE SAVED. There is power, deliverance, help and life in His Name. Call upon His Name!
You are 100% accepted by God, because he sent His Son to pay the full penalty for all your sins. He is a Savior. Your sins were already paid for. He purchased you through the final sacrifice of sin, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. He made an Everlasting Covenant that he wont break with you. Its not his will for you to be powerless with no one to help. Repent of your sins calling aloud on the Name of Jesus. He is risen from the dead, and has ALL POWER in heaven and earth. Ask him to fill you with the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Power. The devil is lying to you trying to destroy you, but God has already defeated the devil, and wants to show you HIS power. Satan is a liar. Jesus said, You shall KNOW the TRUTH, and the TRUTH shall set you FREE.
You need the Word of God in your heart. Read His Word, and get to understand the power you have now that Christ has saved you. Without the Word of God, which is called the Sword of the Spirit, you are left powerless and have no weapon against the attacks. Because its the Word that shows you the truth.
He loves you so much. Turn your life over to Him completely. No more doing your own thing in life. Your old man needs to be buried with Christ and you are risen a new creation. He said, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature. Old things have passed away, behold all things are become NEW. Get into a gospel preaching church that believes in deliverance and healing so you can be encouraged and prayed for. His people will love on you!
As far as your Mom is concerned, take that burden to the Lord and ask him to help you. He is a God of MIRACLES.

      3. God loves us all equally Chi, but it’s good to approach people of strong faith when your faith is weak, as Jesus said: ‘your faith has made you well’.

One woman, with some kind of menstrual issue, touched the edge of Jesus’s garment. I can just imagine her: she was too tired and full of pain to talk to Jesus, it took everything she had in her just to touch the edge of his clothes. But that was enough – she was healed by her little mustard seed of faith, and you are too.

Jesus loves you – he bore your pain on his body. He knows how you feel, and he healed you more than 2000 years ago.

You are a child of God – you have a divine right to love, peace, and joy. God has not forgotten you – you have lost your way. Luckily, Jesus is a shepherd, and he will leave those other people you think he loves more to come and find YOU. He has heard your prayers.

Hold on – you are going through something at the moment. Did you catch that? Going THROUGH – this means you will pass through the other side.

You are an overcomer – you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, but you will fear no evil, for the LORD is with you. He goes before you – take heart, because He who is in you, has overcome the world.

I will pray for you tonight, Chi, overcome. You shall rise up like a warrior and defeat the darkness that has oppressed you.

We have all found this site because we have endured spiritual attacks from the enemy. Today your faith has made you well, so arise, daughter of Abraham! You do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but SPIRITUAL WICKEDNESS! This is a spiritual battle, and you fight it by speaking God’s word – don’t look at the situation, but rather call God’s plan for you life into being – he has good plans for you, to prosper you and not to harm you – to give you a future and a hope!

Claim your inheritance now! The devil is robbing you, but you have the power to claim what is yours by divine decree!

I loose God’s word over your life by my authority in Christ, and I bind the works of the devil against you. In Jesus mighty name you are delivered from the evil one!

  23. I myself am thinking what’s the purpose of me being here. I’m drained, I’m tired, I don’t wanna fight anymore. I lost my children and I did no wrong to them. I lost my husband, I never cheated on him but he cheated on me 6 times. My family has no care or concern for me. I’ve had a brain bleed, I get seizures now. I have an infection on my body 11 years now that splits my flesh on its own. There’s no cure for it. I have no source of income. I panhandle and shoplift to eat and I hate the fact I gotta do it. I’m homeless now because of an illegal lockout. I lost everything I had. I’ve been raped during a seizure. I had a very extreme abusive childhood. Mentally and physically. My innocence was taken from me when I was a little girl. And there’s so much more I’ve been through. Tonight is another night I sleep outside and hungry. I have no one to turn too. I tried to get help. Its not safe being a female and homeless. I may not deserve anything in life, but I know I deserve my grave. Please Lord, come take me home with you. I beg you please. I’m tired. I can’t take this life no more. I DON’T WANNA BE HERE ANYMORE!!!!!

    1. My dear, I am so sorry to hear of your trials and troubles, but hold on to the Power and Promise of God’s Holy Word! The devil is a liar, seeking whom he may devour. You are not alone…I will be praying for you…Cry out to the Lord, He is faithful, Find any thing you can to praise Him for. The enemy is a ferocious liar in this season but “All Power belongs to God.”” God gave us power to trample over all the power of the enemy and nothing by any means shall harm us.” We need to arm ourselves with His Word. The enemy is on the hunt to see whom he may lure away from God. The Word guarantees, ” nothing can separate us from His love.. no principality!” We can always” come boldly unto His Throne of Grace to obtain mercy in our times of trouble” Continue to call on The Mighty Name of Jesus and believe God,” He is not a man that He should lie.” Be well, healed and whole by the Precious Blood of the Lamb, Jesus! One day, if you just hold on and trust Him, He will use you to help someone, and you will be able to testify about how Good The Lord Is, hold on!

    2. I hope ur not hanging out with potential homeless drug addics.. I feel bad about ur lost of ur family. First seek the kingdom of god and all his righteousness and everything will be added. Attend a church and speak to a pastor and tell him of your stituation perhaps someone can give you hospitality. Try to get a job and have faith that god will give u strength to keep one. Renew ur mind and have accountability with christians. Even christians struggle but remember the word says i will dwell in the house of the lord forever. Dwell in a church and attend service and God will honor his servant. God bless u.

  24. Yes, I too know this spirit it is with me constantly. I think sometimes that I am trying to cure my depression with my own insanity so it will never work. Please pray for me as I pray for you.
