How Do We Walk On Water? One Word at a Time

by Rex Rouis

Peter answered, “Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you on the water.” Jesus said, “Come!” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus.” Matthew 14:28, 29

melanie-ewing-walking-on-waterFirst insight: Walking on water has nothing to do with water. The water is a side issue. The real issue has to do with words – God’s words. Peter did not actually walk on the water. He walked on the Word of God, precisely the word “Come” that Jesus spoke to him. He – walked on the Word – on the water. Within that Word from God resided all the miracle-working power necessary for him to do it. When he received that Word, he received the ability. Before he received that Word, he could never have done it.

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. John 6:63

Second insight: Receiving Jesus’ Word to ‘Come’ is insufficient. For it to work, Peter must act on what He says. He will have to throw his leg over the side of the boat and start walking. Faith, the Bible says, ‘without corresponding actions is dead and lifeless.’ By getting out of the boat, he activated the resident power in the Word. It came alive and began to work. Peter was walking on the living and active Word of God.

But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works (corresponding actions) is useless (unproductive)? James 2:20

Take away: How can you walk on your watery situations in life? You can do this by listening to Jesus and by doing precisely what He says. If you do, you will experience God’s miraculous power in your life. If you do not, you will not experience God’s miraculous power in your life. It is that simple. In other words, if you do not hear and obey God’s word, get ready to stay in the boat with the rest of the unbelievers and doubters.

Acting on the heard Word of God activates the power of God.

  1. Thank you sir. I have been tremendously blessed by this article. Greater works in Jesus name.

    1. Matt. 14:22 Then Jesus directed the disciples to get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent away the crowds.

We are all the disciples of Jesus who have accepted Him as our Lord and Savior. We have all been given the same order, but few have been willing to follow Jesus to the other side..

Then ther are two questions coming up, don’t we believe? Are we afraid of what is on the other side?

The boat represents the unity we have been given in Christ, the power of the Holy Spirit in our souls, and the water the metaphor of what His word will do if we are willing to drink it as we drink water.

The other side represents the reward of believing in the ever-living life with Christ, the New Jerusalem.

Jesus said to Peter, COME, but in fact, it’s the same calling Jesus has given to all of us, then let us ensure that we are not met with thise words:

Matt 14:31 Instantly Jesus reached out His hand and caught and held him, saying to him, O you of little faith, why did you doubt?

But before Jesus spoke thise word, He had been given a word of comfort, as He does every day, to secure His disciples to focus on Him and not the world

27 But instantly He spoke to them, saying, Take courage! I AM! Stop being afraid! [Exod. 3:14.]

What did He speak, I AM, and don’t be afraid

Did you know that the phrase: Do not be Afraid is Written in The Bible 365 Times? That’s a Daily Reminder from God to Live Every Day Being Fearless.

The two words I AM, you find: 719 times, in the Old Testament it’s mentioned 508, and in the New 211. Meaning where He is, we are. We have nothing to be afraid of, if we are willing to unite to His word in faith, letting it water our souls, securing that the soul gets the needed water to grow in wisdom and knowledge, supported by the Holy Spirit.
