When You Pray, You Must Believe!

St._Peter_Preaching_Pentecost-300-webby Rex Rouis

The Bible tells us that we are not just to pray, but rather to pray believing. If we are specifically told to believe when we pray, then it must be possible to pray and not believe. Not all prayer brings results. Only believing prayer moves God and receives from Him.

But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavers is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. James 1:6, 7

All of the world’s religions exhort men to pray, but it is only the Bible that requires men to believe what they pray. This is the radical concept of the Bible – the requirement of actually trusting God. This was first exhibited in the Old Testament, and further developed in the New Testament – the absolute necessity for one to believe when one prays. Other religious systems are content with the motions of prayer, but the true Living God requires that we maintain a relationship with Him and that we trust Him.

Therefore, I say unto you, whatsoever things you desire, when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you shall have them. Mark 11:24

Believing takes the emphasis off of prayer itself, and puts the emphasis entirely on God Himself. It is all about Him and His faithfulness. The Bible does not teach is to rely on prayer alone. It teaches us to rely on Him. Only when we can fully rely on Him can we fully pray believing. We are to believe Him first, and then express that belief in prayer. The faith must be in the heart before the prayer comes out of the mouth.

But what does it say? “THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART” — that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. Rom 10:8-10

  1. Praying to God to give me the strength to walk away from this unhappy and unhealthy relationship I been in for over 5 years and every time I try to walk away on my own the devil tell me no and that I need my boyfriend in my life but deep inside I no I need to leave so God I’m asking you and believing in you to give me strength to walk away and start a new life with my beautiful girls and my grandkids…. Amen

    1. God has been dealing with me for a long time in James 2 having faith without deeds. I look the word up and deeds means action, belief and I read Hebrews 11 and received a deeper revelation reading the Hall of Faith- how they trusted God. Faith is hope! My prayer is God help me with my unbelief. I’m stepping out believing God is in control. God lead me to this section for more insight. Walk by faith and not by sight. Hallelujah!!!

  2. Yes Lord, let your will be done. God has a plan for all of us. Through the trials , God can make us stronger.

  3. Rex, you and everyone on this website are such an incredible blessing to all of us. You are shedding light on how faith works and how much God loves us.

  4. Jesus, by your will , not mine. I ask and receive your blessings in all areas of my life. In Jesus name. Amen.

Lynette – I have to be honest and direct. Your above prayer is not a believing prayer. Faith knows the will of God because it was previously resolved and received in seeking His word and His face. As one teacher once said, “Faith begins where the will of God is known.” Mark 11:23, 24 states clearly that you have to ‘know’ that you will receive when you pray to physically receive it later. And because of that faith is specific. How else can you know when you have received or not?

The only way to know this is to hear from God Himself. That is why Romans 10:17 states that “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the (spoken) word of Christ.” I put spoken in there because that is the meaning of the Greek word for ‘word’ in that verse. Not a general word like that which refers to the whole written word of God.

Your statement above is one of submission and is beautiful but it is not faith. Faith requires taking that attitude of submission and seeking God’s will till the answer comes from Him, then you can stand on that spoken (and heard) word when the rains come, and they will come.

The only reason I would mention this is because this is the whole reason for this site, to get this message out on how faith works, and to dispell the religious misunderstandings. We love you. Rex

I’m so renewed and excited for what Ya Is doing in my life. I’ve been on this journey with Him for 38 years and the last 3 year’s have truly been unexplainable. I feel like shouting right now but it’s 4:16a.m. lol.

    1. I am concerned about the misrepresentation in the second part of Shadrach Meshach and Abednegos response to King Nebuchadnezzar, the” but if not” referred to: but if you don’t throw us in the fire, then let it be known to you we will not worship your image Etc, not any question of what God was going to do, they said can and will to that in the last verse. please send me your comments thank you and God bless

  9. When I felt frustrated and thought that God never answers, He taught me these to overcome the bad spirits in my mind:
    (1) Don’t set deadline. It thins your faith as time approaches a finite because the Lord is Infinite.
    (2) Don’t ask Him when. Let the Lord bring forth the desired outcome in His pleasure. If not we are testing the Lord.
    (3) Always remember the three temptations the devil failed in the desert. We live on Words of God. Never put our Lord to the test. Only serve our Lord, our Lord only.
    Amen. Much better now.
