Jesus Is a Person – So Is the Holy Spirit

Spirit-in-Church-325-webby Rex Rouis

In the fourteenth through sixteenth chapters of John’s Gospel, Jesus goes out of His way to introduce the Holy Spirit as a Person – as a ‘He.’ Look at this excerpt:

“When the Counselor comes, the One I will send to you from the Father–the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father–He will testify about Me. John 15:26

Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away because if I don’t go away, the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send Him to you. John 16:7

When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak whatever He hears. He will also declare to you what is to come. He will glorify Me because He will take from what is Mine and declare it to you. Everything the Father has is Mine. This is why I told you that He takes from what is Mine and will declare it to you. John 16:13 – 15

Wow, that’s a lot of ‘He’s.’ However, there is a tendency to think of the Holy Spirit as an ‘it,’ merely as a power emanating from God. In scripture, the Spirit is clearly presented as a Person – the Third Person of the Trinity. The Holy Spirit is not the power of God; He is God. He is a Person like Jesus is a Person.

Even though we have not seen Jesus with our physical eyes, it is not so hard to visualize Him as a person. He had a physical body, and He walked and talked on earth. He had human emotions, and He showed them freely. It is not difficult to relate to Him as a Person. He is Jesus, the Incarnate Son of God, born of a virgin, fully God and fully Man.

Relating to the Holy Spirit is more challenging. He never had a physical body and never actually walked on this earth. However, He is just as much a Person. He is the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Trinity, sent by God the Father and God the Son to be our Helper. He is God on the earth today, albeit without a physical body. To miss the Holy Spirit today is like living in the time of Jesus and missing Him. Like Jesus, the Holy Spirit speaks to all who will listen, but He speaks only to hearts.

To miss the Holy Spirit today is like living in the time of Jesus and missing Him.
The more we realize that the Holy Spirit is a Person, the more we will treat Him as a Person, and the more we do that, the more He will respond to us as a Person. This new relationship is crucial. While Jesus was on earth, His disciples went to Him freely for help. Now, we are commanded to boldly approach the Father in Jesus’ Name. This direct access to the Father is accomplished only through the Person of the Holy Spirit. It is the only way.

In that day you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you. Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full. John 16:23, 24

In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf; for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came forth from the Father. John 16:26, 27

Jesus clearly states that we are not to go to Him but rather directly to the Father through the Holy Spirit, in His Name.  He is emphatic. He will not go to the Father on our behalf. Let that sink in. Our relationship is now solely through the Person of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God in the world today. Learn about Him, go to Him, talk to Him, and develop a deep relationship with Him.

The following are traits of the Holy Spirit. Study them and learn about Him:

The Spirit glorifies and bears witness to Christ

But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, Who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness about Me. John 15:26

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. Romans 8:16

He will glorify Me, for He will take what is mine and declare it to you. John 16:14

The Spirit speaks, teaches, and give orders

The Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go over and join this chariot.’ Acts 8:29

While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them. Acts 13:2

The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26

We impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. I Corinthians 2:13

They went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. Acts 16:6-7

The Spirit searches everything and comprehends God’s thoughts

The Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. . . . no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. I Corinthians 2:10-11

The Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And He who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26-27

The Spirit distributes spiritual gifts and has a will

It is the one and only Spirit Who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have. I Corinthians 12:11

The Spirit can be lied to, grieved, and outraged

Why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit? You have not lied to men but to God. Acts 5:3, 4

Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by Whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Ephesians 4:30

How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has outraged the Spirit of grace? Hebrews 10:29

The Bible is a progressive revelation of how the Trinity (God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit) is/are developing an ever closer relationship with mankind:

1. In the Old Testament, God dwelt in a physical tabernacle within the Nation of Israel.
2. Jesus became a human to be the ‘Immanuel’ – ‘God with us.’
3. God manifests Himself as the Holy Spirit ‘within us.’
4. And someday soon, we shall all live with God as a single family – us in Him and Him in us

God is a Person, drawing us closer and closer to Him. Let’s do everything we can to respond and relate to Him. In today’s world, ‘Him’ means the Holy Spirit.

Comments

  1. Rex, I can’t tell you what this teaching on Holy Spirit has done for me. I will continue to meditate on it as it is life changing for me! God walked with Adam in the cool of the day. Jesus made a way for God to walk with me on this earth, every day through the person of Holy Spirit. Hallelujah!
John Sagai, your comment was equally as eye opening! Thank you so much!

  2. The Holy Spirit is God indeed! God the Holy Spirit is the Chief Executive of the New Covenant established by God the Father through the redemptive work of God the Son – Jesus. All the redemptive benefits and promises of the New Covenant can find expression and manifestation only through God the Holy Spirit. It is God the Holy Spirit that makes what Jesus has accomplished for us a reality in our earthly lives! Ignoring the Holy Spirit is our greatest disadvantage as believers, or collectively as the Body of Christ. The Holy Spirit is God in the earth today! This is His Era, His Epoch, His time. It began on the day of Pentecost and it is still ongoing. The first step to developing a very intimate walk with the Holy Ghost is to WORSHIP Him. I worship you Holy Spirit, you are God in the earth today, and I walk with you by saying words.

    1. Please I need a short answer.
So there are only two individuals..?
Because the third is the Spirit of God. He is not counted as another individual because He is the Spirit of one of the two.

      Please clarify.

For example: There’s Jack and Jill. The third one is Jill’s spirit. There’s only really two individuals or persons Jack and Jill. But the other is a very helpful, comforting spirit of Jill.

I am sorry I want you to understand my question hence the example. I dont mean to make fun or anything I AM JUST SO CONFUSED.

Also now the HS is too the Spirit of Jesus. Dear God!!! Please help me understand this.

So the HS is the Spirit of God and Jesus combined??

Please short answers only. I don’t want to get confused further.

      1. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit is Jesus. Only the Holy Spirit can teach you about Himself (Pray the Pauline prayers in Ephesians 3:14-end and Ephesians 1: 15-end. God bless you ( do not be afraid, open your heart to the Lord)

  3. Thank you lord Jesus for the gift of the holy spirit you gave to us ,he has really helped us to overcome the deception of satan

    1. Well done, Jesus sends us another “counselor” another “helper” as the “Holy Spirit”.

  4. Thank you so much for this segment on the Holy Spirit. I do understand the Holy Spirit better now. The more I study the closer I get. That’s what it’s all about. Right?

  5. I don’t agree with the statement: “Jesus clearly states that we are not to go to Him but rather directly to the Father through the Holy Spirit, in His Name. He is emphatic. He will not go to the Father on our behalf. Let that sink in.”

NKJV Romans 8:34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

Richard – The scriptures I showed were:

In that day you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you. Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full. John 16:23, 24

In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf; for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came forth from the Father. John 16:26, 27

The principal of prayer from the Ressurection on is to ask the Father in the Name of the Son – In Jesus Name. We don’t ask Jesus Himself, and He will not ask for us. Our prayer is our responsibility. Yes, Jesus interceeds for us but that is a different issue. That is not about individual prayer needs that we would have. Rex

  6. Although the biblical narrative establishes the glory of GOD in a three persons crowning order, I much prefer the family order. I always thankful to the Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit in Jesus name.

  7. I receive that truth! Thank you for confirming what I just read in scripture

    1. Amazing truth about God in three. Holy Spirit is the person…. Thanks for sharing us an amazing truth that God wanted you to sharr with us all.

  8. THE HOLY SPIRIT lives in me…my body is HIS BODY…Haleluyah…this is so much clearer… HE is in charge of my life, HE has the right of way…Praise GOD.

  9. what makes us different from the unbelievers is the fact that the person of the Holy Spirit is dwell in us and gives our worship the sweet fragrance in life. Praise the Lord, I am convinced that it was certainly better for Jesus, as he said in the gospel, to go and send us the Holy Spirit to be in US.I love the Holy Spirit as it gives me confidence and grace to approach the throne of God to receive help whenever I am in need.
    God Bless!

  10. Thank you Jesus for this revealed truth. May you Father, give us a desire for you more and more

  11. Thank you ever so much for this insight. I do pray that God Almighty, Heavenly Father Abba, to help me to hear his voice and learn to discern when he speaks. I Thank you God, that your loving kindness endures forever. Help us, your saint in the earth to have a greater, deeper, more intimate relationship with our Holy Spirit in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

  12. When I pray to Jesus….I use His Name….(Jesus, Help me.)

I want to pray to the Spirit – How do I address Him?

    1. you don’t pray to the Holy Spirit, but you pray to the Father through the name of Jesus and the Holy Spirit is the one responsible the bring the answer.

    2. When you have addressed Jesus, You have addressed the Father and the Spirit. For He is the father and the Spirit in bodily form! His name is the name of the Father, and of the Spirit. Acts 4:12 is clear!
      John 5:43

There is nothing in the URL that contradicts this teaching. And there is nothing in there that teaches ‘Jesus Only.’ Jesus is the only way to God. Jesus paid for our salvation. The power of God has been invested in His Name, the Name of Jesus. There is no other name that can bring healing and salvation.

Again, now that Jesus is resurrected, we are to pray to the Father in the Name of Jesus. The Spirit is the one Who does the communication and power in the earth now. Jesus was very clear – “Do not pray to me, For I will not answer. And I will not do your praying for you (this does not include His intercessory work). Pray in faith to the Father in my Name, and He (the Father through the Holy Spirit) will do it.

          1. Ok, do you believe there is salvation in the name of Jesus? You said: And there is nothing in there that teaches ‘Jesus Only.’ Jesus is the only way to God. Acts 4:12 says there is no other name under heaven given whereby we must be saved! So it says “Jesus is the only way to GOD!” Revelation 1:8 tells us John identified Jesus as the “Almighty”! I think you’re confused about who Jesus is, and the role He plays with His children.

    1. congratulations ella keep learning more and more about him help change the world spread his name

  13. This reading gives me a better understanding of the Holy Spirit which I did not have before. Thank you.
