Even in the midst of blessings, people can have recurrent fits of depression. It comes in like a dark, heavy cloud. We pray, fast, or make resolutions, only to find it getting worse. That is because this cloud of depression is not mental; it is spiritual. It is called the spirit of heaviness.
“To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.” Isaiah 61:3
It is an evil spirit—a personality that studies us, knows our weaknesses, and knows how and when to attack. Recognizing the identity of an enemy is a tremendous first step, but then it must be fought.
It shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered. Joel 2:32
Meditate on scriptures like the one above and pray: “God, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ – according to Your Word – I’m asking you to deliver me from this spirit of heaviness in Jesus Name.”
The pressure will lift, but it is one thing to be delivered; it is another thing to stay delivered. It is now up to us to reprogram our minds – to cultivate a different outlook and way of thinking. Before deliverance, we are not able to do it, but now after deliverance, it is our responsibility to do it.
The problem is our mind. The devil reaches people through their minds. The more we trust in our mind, the more Satan is able to use it against us. It is up to us to make our mind realize that it is our servant, not our master. Our minds are affected by our thoughts, so we must take charge of what we think.
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, 4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but [b]divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. 5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, II Corinthians 10:3-5
Remember, just as heaviness is a real spirit, the God of the Bible is a real Person, and He is behind each promise. He promised them to you for a reason – to help you. Read them, study them, meditate on them. They will give you hope and they will change you. It will not come in five minutes. It will take hard work, but it will come and it will work, and it is worth every bit of effort.
God’s deliverance can set you free, but it is your responsibility to fight for your continued deliverance. Take control of your thoughts, and bring them under control and in line with the Word of God. Experience the glorious freedom and joy that God has for you.

Thank you, I will fight for the life My LORD has for me. Every time the depression would come back I would take ultram . Then I would find myself in another trap and would have to quit taking them suddenly but I would suffer the terrible withdrawal effects. Eventually I would get past that and shortly thereafter I’d find myself suffering depression again. I kept going around this circle over and over. This my time . Knowing I need to use the weapons the LORD has supplied for me coupled with my holy anger is all I need now. Thank you for the article.

June, my heart goes out to you. You describe a life whereby you have no peace and hate everyone as you feel people and life has not been fair to you. You say you cry a lot, skip meals etc and don’t take good care of yourself. These sad feelings and despair I know are real.
But God Almighty is even more real. You said you pray for God to help you.
However, we have to come to God at His own terms, through His words.
God says in the Bible His thoughts are not our thoughts nor His ways aren’t similar to our ways.
God says you must first Repent for you to be reconnected/reconciled to Him.
Jesus said ” Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is near”.
That means June, we must not only ask God to forgive us,but we must also forgive others. We cannot hate other people and believe God will agree with us. We must turn away from what we usually hear described us Negativity. Anger, hatred, bitterness,filthy communication, lusts of the flesh and immorality etc. We can call on the name of Jesus for forgiveness and ask God for the help of the Holy Spirit.
Then June, join a church that teaches and believes the bible. A church that also believes in the power of Christ to change lives. It is advisable to also talk to a trusted adult in your life. A school counselor,a pastor’s wife or trusted minister if you know one. Going for medical checkup and involving yourself in safe physical exercises, healthy eating.
Take cheer and courage June. Prayed for you. Life can be fulfilling although we sometimes experience difficulty.
The key is to reach out to others. I am not saying tell everybody your troubles. Join a bible study group,listen to good music.
We have to trust God for the future. I believe the book of 1st Peter 5:7 says “Cast your cares/concerns/worries upon the Lord for He cares for you.”

There are mountains you are going to move, your high school and college graduations are not far behind, your marriage is ahead of you, raising your children and seeing your grandchildren is ahead of you. How does someone approach the church to have this prayer over them and help to get it out of their life. Emotional pain doesn’t heal overnight.
My daughter is 17yrs and has lost herself worth. She is so talented and beautiful be she doesn’t love herself and tried on two occasions to end her life. Please pray that the spirit of heaviness be lifted from her. That her mind be healed and that the Lord will deliver her from the evil spirit of depression. Please pray fervently. God bless. Thank you
The Apostle was of course bringing correction to the assembly of believers in Corinthians, but by no means was he discrediting or disallowing the speaking in tongue. He was making the point of keeping order in the assembly so that there would be understanding of what God wanted to speak amongst them. Tongues, I agree, if not followed by interpretation, should be spoken to oneself because it is a gift of edification.
When I’m attacked from the enemy I pray in the spirit (tongues). The Word says that when you speak in tongues you edify yourself (builds you up) 1 Cor. 14:4.
To an extent you are interpreting 1 Corinthians 14: 4 out of context and, potentially, incorrectly. The ‘Believer’s Bible Commentary’ explains it very well: “Verse 4 is commonly used to justify the private use of tongues for self-edification. But the fact that the word “church” is found nine times in this chapter (vv. 4, 5, 12, 19, 23, 28, 33, 34, 35) offers rather convincing evidence that Paul is not dealing with a believer’s devotional life in the privacy of his room, but with the use of tongues in the local assembly. The context shows that, far from advocating the use of tongues for self-edification, the apostle is condemning any use of the gift in the church that does not result in helping others. Love thinks of others and not of self. If the gift of tongues is used in love, it will benefit others and not only oneself.
He who prophesies edifies the church. He is not parading his gift for personal advantage, but speaking constructively in a language the congregation can understand.
How can I receive the gift of tongues, Ive been praying about it but it hasnt happened yet?
Let a pastor or two pray with you. Join in a community group. Let them live on you. Surrender in prayer your transgressions and any hindrances you have. Let the tears flow. Seek silence with God and let Jesus move his spirit upon you and heal you of all the pain and knots of troubles. Be in the mist of the church (The Body of Christ) and meditate in worship.

This works. Really amazing. This breaks a yoke and you will find yourself out of bed. With energy. Use this knowledge to get your thoughts in line.

For some reason , sensitive people are attacked in their minds.
Praise drives out the spirit of heaviness.
Play the track while you are laying in bed or cleaning or walking. This is absolutely a true break through. Test this. .

Petra, during the time i was depressed (three times now and am just 29years) which i call the god mode, because of the thoughts i have, i can’t sleep, i do things directly and consciously, i can’t eat, to bath was hard, i questioned everything. But i started praying, take medications, force myself to do the things I don’t feel like doing, read a book to get my mind off my thoughts, it helps. I still have those thoughts in my head they can’t go away but am living with it and am happy, above all don’t be ashame to seek help.
June, i can relate with how you are feeling, have been there myself, you have to be strong, I won’t deceive you, don’t stay only on prayers please, mind you God answers prayers, and He has also place people around us to help us heal, medication also help, don’t be ashame to see a psychiatrist, I did on multiple occasions and i also prayer and read the word of God. You have to work at it too, keep doing those things you don’t feel like doing, not the sinful act though. Go to a movie, force yourself to see it to the end, avoid depressing movies for awhile. After been depress three times myself, i learned few things.

I am 12 years old, I know, I’m pretty young but I’m not dumb at all. My mind has gone to places no one has ever seen it experienced before. I will get scared to the future and get scared of what’s going to happen next. I feel like I am not protected all the time and I don’t know how to make it stop. Therapy hasn’t made it better and I am trying to read the bible and pray every night. Hoping for the best. Also I’m praying for all the ones who are going through depression and sadness. You are so very brave to post this comment and I am praying for you right now! God has a plan and a purpose for your life, a plan to prosper you and not to harm you, a plan to give you a hope and a future. When you walk and journey through difficult things and get to the other side, you can understand and know the difficulties of others in a way that no one can. Keep picking up your sword, which is the Word of God, everyday. You will see results and you will be fighting with strength and purpose! You will be able to share with others about your journey and help them out of the dark. You have a tender and sensitive heart and my prayer this morning is that you will be protected on every side and experience the love of the Lord like never before. Hello. I’m a 15 year old girl who has already been depressed for 3 years. I went through a lot of hardships in school (bullying, being introduced to a lot of sinful acts) when it first started. It has gotten so bad I skip school a lot, I skip meals, I can’t take care of my health, I hate myself, I cry every night, I cry at school, I hate everyone around me I am never at peace. I’ve been praying and praying for so long. Nothing is changing. I do admit that I am lazy (which I also pray for) and can’t get myself to do much. The devil has too much control over me, and I need prayers and help. Right now. I am desperate and my life is ..hell. I want to be free, I want to be happy and I want to take care of my physical health better than I do now. Somebody, please…
Young lady I pray for you right now in the name of Jesus Christ. I take authority over any depressed spirit that is effecting your life. I command it to line up with the word of God that says you are delivered and you are healed. Consume yourself with the word of God and walk and the freedom and peace that can only come from Jesus Christ. By His stripes we are healed. And I declare you to be healed and delivered right now.
Just ignore the thoughts that coming through your mind and counteract them with the word of God.

I agree in Jesus name! We stand together in agreement against the bondage and attacks of the enemy. Start recognizing the negativity coming in and out of you, as soon as it pops up in your head, and negative self talk, stop everything and pray for Jesus to take it and visualize Him grabbing it and throwing it far away from you. I feel immediate peace when I do this. Don’t let them pile up, if you do it will be too heavy to carry. Imagine each negative thought as a snake or a brick (anything that repulses you) that is trying to place itself on you. You do not have to receive it. If you take it, it will take you over. Dont receive it! Only receive good and lovely things. Soon you will be lighter and walking with ease through each step back to life.

I am so burdened to hear the way the Devil has afflicted your life. The mere fact that you have a desire to be get out of the situation you are in, testifies that there is something inside you that knows that there is something that can be done to change the situation. Part of this verse talks about God restoring His people by giving the beauty for ashes , oil of joy for mourning and very important for your case, a garment of praise instead of the spirit of depression or heaviness .
It’s means that depression is an unclean spirit.
Unclean spirits have only one mission in life to shove us to hell. That’s why you are having suicidal thoughts . Once you kill yourself the unclean spirit of depression will move on to someone else.
You need to befriend the Holy Spirit so that you can get rid of of the unclean spirit in you that is driving you crazy
The Holy Spirit represents purity, peace , clarity, intellect and strength.
I order to enjoy the fruits of the Holy Spirit we need to desire to be filled by Him.

I’m praying for and with you. Try having a routine/ schedule for your prayer and please get around someone you can talk to about how your feeling. God loves you and though it may not seem this way you are important and have purpose.
Depression is real and I pray for us all,even pastors go through this but through prayer and talking to someone it helps us.
I have been living with depression since 2014. I have tried everything I could medication, therapy and prayers. Nothing seems to be working. Right now I am deep in depression and I just want to go to bed and never wake up because I am tired of being alive and wishing I was dead.
Praying for u. It WILL get better through prayer, through reading/meditating on scripture, through the power of God u WILL overcome. It’s a lie of the enemy to have thoughts wishing u were dead. Reach out to ur physician. Also reach out to people who U r confident will be praying for u. I’m sure as people see ur message here they will be praying for u too. I am. God is sovereign, God loves u, God has plans for u. Don’t allow the enemy to steal that from u and destroy u. Cling to God . Fill ur mind with TRUTH in Gods word and don’t believe Lies of the enemy. The enemy want you dead. But tell the enemy that he is a lier and you will live and declare the works of the Lord. God have a plan for your life and it is a great plan. The devil knows that so he comes to kill steal and destroy from your Life. But Jesus came that you will have life and have it abundantly. You have to be willing to live for him meaning giving your life to him. Walking in repentance and salvation. He loves you and wants you to do great things and prosper but live your for him and you will be free. His word says who the Son set free is free indeed. God Bless! Hi Petra – I have the same feelings as you daily, regarding not wanting to live…I’ve had depression since childhood, but it flared up in 2014 when I found out my ex husband was cheating. My life has totally done an unpleasant 180, and I’ve never been the same since. I find myself sleeping in my free time, whenever I get a chance, just to escape the reality of being awake, having to “live.” But I’m still doing medication and therapy, going one day it will work…I’ll be praying for you, and hope that with time your wounds will heal, and maybe one day you will rejoice.
